I was just offered the opportunity to return to Weatherford after being laid off 13 months ago. The kicker? It would be a contract position paying 33% less than I was making for a far more complex job that used to pay double what they're offering for it now. What kinda bullshiggaty...?

Weatherford is third rate. Go work for a winner company, not a loser outfit like Weatherford/
Negotiate the salary, they will always low ball you. Ask for me and i bet they will agree.
Uh, genius, people are being cut because Weatherford can't afford to keep paying them. If they want their business to continue they need to reduce labor costs without shutting down the company. Offering a contractor 33% less salary cuts their labor costs in half: no benefits, insurance, payroll taxes, severance package, etc.
Be a bitter SOB and tell 'em to shove it. Let a more grateful ex-employee have that job.

beggars can't be choosers. If my old employer asked me to come back on contract I would jump at the chance.
Go for it, the market is bad right now. Unless you prefer sitting on your tush. If something comes up while you're doing that you can chunk deuces to them and leave!
