Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Guess the percentage of "Must Move" expats who get jobs in this ROM

My guess is not more than 10 -15% of all must moves will get jobs, and the rest will be cut, simply because it costs more to bring us back than it does to keep someone where they are.

I am a must move and in scope, and I am fully aware of the tricks that CVX is playing just get legal complications out of their back. I don't like it at all but if I am in the same survival mode, not sure I care or bother about fairness or proper way to put my head above the water....bottem line, I am ready for the worst, unless I am told otherwise in April 7-11th...

@1pea,

Is your entire group "Must Moves", or are you guys in the USA? Your 80% left standing is right in line with my initial 10-15% getting jobs. I pulled that number out of my hat, but I think it will turn out to be pretty accurate.

I am not angry with Chevron for having to reduce manpower. It is just business, and I will survive. I am angry with the way that they are doing the reduction. They post almost 3000 jobs, knowing full well that most of them are not job openings that a person applying for them may actually get. Managers were told to post 60%. They were not told to actually open 60% of the jobs.

I would much rather see 500 actual open jobs, and if there are none that I am qualified for, I know that I will be left standing. Simple, straight forward, and to the point. This is how adults conduct their business, and I am disappointed in the way that my company is acting. I get to say "My Company" because I am one of the fools who actually believes, lives, and advocates the "Chevron Way" behaviors.

We were told that 80% of our team will be left standing. We have an honest manager, probalbly the only one in Chevron.

1ygl -- It is troubling to know that merit doesn't count at Chevron. What does count?

When the market turns around expats will once again be required. Chevron will find spots for as many expats as possible for this reason. It's a lot easier to fill a spot back in Houston to replace the expat going back overseas than it is to vet a new hire to throw to the wolves overseas. If you are the current U.S. based employee that gets displaced by an expat maybe you get lucky and can have your old job back when the expat goes back overseas.

I am saying that the higher the PSG the better the treatments as an expatriate

Takes a real brainiac to figure that out. Any more brilliant observations to share, Captain Obvious?

Well 1xwb, I can only hope that you are right. I do not think you are, but we will soon see.

I stick with my pick of 10-15% of the must move expats getting positions, and the other 85-90% (of which I am one) being left standing.

@1qyg "As long as the person who is in the job does it to the minimum level"

Statements like this are exactly why we are going through this exercise. Trust me when I say, there are plenty of people in scope that will exceed the expected level, expat or not.

Minimum level = you cost more than the value you bring to the company; I would be worried for my job if that's what I thought about my contributions.

Company has invested money in expats. So normally one would expect the company to make every effort not to lose them by finding positions for them. But then one never knows with Chevron. Things are not according to merit here.

1nqa,

I am an expat, but I get the feeling that all of the jobs posted already have a person in them, and that it is much easier to keep that person than to take a flier on someone who might be better. As long as the person who is in the job does it to the minimum level, a must move like me will not take it.

Of course I hope that you are right.

I think it's funny how US employees sitting in the States have convinced themselves that the expats are screwed. The only people claiming open Positions are expats. It costs the company on average of about $1 mil a year to keep them overseas. Do you think the company considers them deadwood? Also, the fact that expats are by far more connected than US employees do to their transit Chevron life. Somebody willing to move their family and small children to 3rd world locations for Chevron seems way more valuable than somebody that has spent their carrier sitting in Houston making no real upward movement. Hey guys, keep dreaming if it makes you feel better. The only people threating you losing your job are expats that are eyeing it and calling all their contacts to find out if you're deadwood before they apply. Sorry, but this is really what's happening.

I agreed with @GsnTLh2-xmx. I am an expatriate myself going on my third tours, raising from PSG 23 to PSG24. I have been in Jakarta, Edinburgh and Lekki. Those expatriate managers of PSG26 and PSG27 are having white glove treatment. They have company paid country club membership, 24 hour chauffeur, security guard, personal administrative assistant.... They fly in and out of the country all the time. I am not saying they are doing a bad job. I am saying that the higher the PSG the better the treatments as an expatriate (do not forget the stock options !!! and the good-old-boy/girl-network).

@nfw, I don't know what country you are working in, but I travel overseas often to places where my expat friends live in posh surroundings, with executive-style furnished apartments, chauffeur, maid service and ocean front restaurants within a stones throw. Now, I have been to places like you describe... Third World dives.

cck, if you were part of an expat community, you would see how stupid your comment is. I do not know about all locations, but where I am, no one feels safe, and no one is poker buddies with the sponsor. People here simply try to do the best job they can, with working conditions that are difficult on the best day, and nearly impossible on the worst.

Most expats will find positions as they are part of the friends and family network. Being golf, cricket, or poker buddies with the sponsors will go a long way in this ROM.

Not all expats are residents. Many, or most are rotators, so that theory is pretty well shot to shout CCP.

Must move expats still have to be returned to home country and then get released, so there is already a trip home factored no matter the outcome.
