Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Life after Murthy

What was life at Qcom like with Murthy and has it improved after he left. What was the view of him.

Intel hates him. Actually there are many high level execs that came to intel and they are all the same. I could only imagine what Qcom was like with all of them there. There are bringing there practices to Intel and making the moral go down the toilet.

QC after murthy has been a lot more relaxed place. Current management has tried to understand hardware and software complexity. They are looking towards designing scalable solutions with an aspiration to have chips in every single mobile segment and adjacent markets. Work is hectic, but no more working on long weekends ... answering 2 am calls so that someone can send a status update to murthy ... Bonus and RSU has evaporated but a little bit of sanity has been restored back into people's lives !!!

Let us not pretend that Intel had very high moral standards. I have worked at both of them and they are exactly the same. Politics, back stabbing, mediocrity etc were pretty much a common norm. One fundamental difference between two companies is the mentality.

Qualcomm i saw operated with a under-dog mentality - product schedules and road maps keep shrinking since they accept pretty much every customer demand. This is the mentality which helps them keep churning out products at a steady pace because the whole company has grown to accept that this is their life style.

Intel i saw always operated with a market leader mentality - product schedules and road maps where written at the whims and fancies of someone in the marketing group. People are used to it and now they are surprised that things being asked well ahead of the delivery date. This is a problem for Murthy, since he is used to getting his way with adjusting deadline and time to market. His only priority is managing customer expectation and growing the business. He will chop the company to pieces if it doesn't grow beyond a certain point.

Murthy has lots of "Mini-mes." They are like a cancer that mestastasizes and will eat your company from the inside, sapping morale, and eventually driving off your best engineers. If your top corporate officers and directors on Intel's Board are not willing to call him in for a "come to Jesus meeting," your best alternative to negotiated agreement for severance is to get the hell out for a job with a better work environment.
