Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

How come Intel can threaten employees to make a decision on VSP/ERP without any data provided on how close to meeting targets each group are?

They don't know where they are w.r.t. the quota until tomorrow night. Can't post something you don't know.

After two levels up they sure feel like the enemy

Anecdotally (presumably the actual figures will soon emerge), they do SEEM to be shedding a significant number of the higher grades through ERP. To bitterly assume it's only the "worker bees" being shown the door is myopic.

And, by the way, unless you're one of the very few people who are actually calling the shots at Intel, you're in the same boat, dealing with the same storm. Most management faces the same uncertainty, desperately scrambling to keep their teams on a viable project. They're just seeing the storm from a higher vantage point. Seeing this as "Us vs. Them" is another bitterly myopic perspective.

No, they DON'T all "protect each other" at the upper levels - they try force each other out. They're very much competing with each other for an ever-decreasing number of power positions - and now projects. The worker bees DEPEND on the connections and presentations of their managers - the ability of their managers to make the team at least appear to be valuable. You all depend on each other. YOUR upper management is not the enemy.

HC is not cost savings, it's a numbers game.

Grade 10 = 1.5xgrade9=2xgrade8=?1.5xgrade7

I don't even know what 11 and 12 make.

I assume the distribution isn't even power law, high salary with small population. I think it's high salary with high population

To save money get rid of the higher ups (the plan plan planers http://dilbert.com/strip/2008-10-28).

I know of an acquisition where the layoff was HC not money, since they layed off the low pay technicians.

This layoff is a load of malarkey. Leave the worker bees alone and take out the drones.

We the worker bees know who the bad performers are. We can identify for removal or improvement needed.

I assume there is a lot more crap on top then on the bottom. At least the internal videos seems to prove that.

"Whatever happened to the Intel value of making data based decisions?"

It's gone ... this is not the Intel we used to know, and this layoff is not business as usual. Every single manager and senior colleague I've talked to (who have been here more than 20+ years) tell me they hv never seen anything like this during their whole careers. Not one of them says things are going to get better, at least not in the short to medium term. That should tell you something, make your decisions and plan your careers accordingly.

If you're Intel, what behavior do you want to encourage going forward? During future layoffs, do you want everyone to wait until the last minute, to see if enough of their co-workers have fallen on their swords already, so they don't have to? If people know that information is coming, they'll wait for it. And then no one quits.

If Intel doesn't quickly turn a lot of those VSPs into ISPs - with lesser benefits - who will leave voluntarily in the future? The VSPs will just wait until they're ISPed if there's no significant downside.

Intel's goal seems to be to lay off A LOT of people. Are they really foolish enough to behave in a counterproductive fashion? We shall see.

They want you to leave not give you hope.

No. The data is HC targets, project cancellations, efficiency actions.

The data is they want you out. meeting target good, exceeding target is better, so you have to go regardless.

No one is arguing that. But, why not give the targets, project cancellations, etc this side of June 2nd instead of keeping it a secret? Give employees all the info, all the data and then let them decide? That's what I mean, and I'm assuming the OP, when we say make a data based decision.

It is a business. They have data that shows what needs to be done to survive. You would to if you run a business.
