Oh Wait, they are Scabs, they thought they could just take over and be respected by their new employer...LMBO!......Once a Scab always a Scab...you will never live it down!....Everyone you talk to may seem sympathetic to your situation but inside their mind, they are laughing at you and thinking what a Scab you are and you deserve what you got, in spades!

To answer your question, it is part of the rules the union members sign up for when they were hired. It is a closed shop so we must pay (or payback) 2% of our base pay each week to the union until the day we retire, regardless of the reason or if we want to be a member or not, we have no choice. Even when I was on disability for 6 months, the union still got its cut each week, so for the next six weeks, I will be paying double dues to pay back what they lost while I was out. Company / Union, there both the same when it comes to their bottom line.

I for one would never join a union. I admire your devotion, but not my thing. i could not imagine being in a group where the only thing that matters is senority. Then the only goal is maintaining status quo. No innovation, no creativity. It is funny some of the critism of EWA work. They were a bandaid to keep the lights on, and went above and beyond. Union is back with a fair contract to continue status quo for wireline/landline in NE. Verizon got the major financial concessions to try to stay competitive (healthcare, buyouts) and Union got a reasonable raise. Obama's administration got the strikers back to work prior to unemployment. That will keep status quo for a little while. What I don't understand, is why are union still obligated to pay the dues for the unpaid period? Should that not be covered by the strike fund?
Trust me. If those scabs had the chance to be in a union they would jump at it. For their families of course. Right?

Scabs made the hard decision to do what was right for their families. I admire them for this... more importantly, their families do. The respect of their wives, children, and partners is far more important than the members of some little club they belong to. The fact that your priorities are so out of wack just illustrates how ethically challenged the majority of union members are.
