@qjy, once a manager gets detached from his employees by 2-3 levels, they stop seeing them as people and they become resources.
I wouldn't expect corporate level management to care about mundane things like atmosphere and workplace environment, resources don't have feelings.
@alf - i totally get, and understand that Intel is an "at-will" company. They don't owe me anything, and i can get let go for just about any reason. And to be honest, Intel has been good to me, so if the bar gets raised even higher next year or whenever, who knows when my own time will come.
i just wonder though if they realized that this new environment of fear, uncertainty, and doubt that now lingers through these hallways now is something that they even gave a brief thought to. Maybe they did, and still said f*** it. Given the rumors of this new focal process that will roll out in July, i'm pretty sure its all pretty intentional.
At this point, i'm guessing the whole concept of Redeployment (2 months to look for a new job) is also kicked to the curb, even though its not really been mentioned. But it would be in line with all the other stuff they've nixed.
Hi @vrq, @alf here. Completely agree with you, I think this is what's messed up with Intel these days. No long term career path available in most groups/positions. How many people can make it to gr10 (director/PE level)? Not that many. Gr8/9 should be considered terminal grades and treated as such for all intents and purposes. But then again Intel is not in the business of being logical and fair to its employees anymore.
@vrq here - the most eye-opening thing i learned about my friends situation is that you can be too long in grade even as a G9. Hell... i know people who have spent their entire careers at Intel and retired as G7 (in the good ol days i mean). If you can be too long in grade as a G9, then there is no place (grade-wise) where you are safe. Before i heard this, i just assumed once you reached G8, they stopped this ridiculous metric of being one standard deviation or more in your grade as a criteria for VSP.
In fact, its more of a curse being at a higher grade, as the availability of jobs at those grades are MUCH harder to come by and you are continually competing against younger, often higher-energy, more ambitious engineers making a lot less money. It seems moving forward, they will continue to rotate the higher compensated (not necessarily older, but that just typically goes with the territory) out, and rotate younger, more affordable engineers in. And lets just be completely honest here. As you get older, your energy level and ambition, and desire to complete/grow/... slows down. And it really is harder to compete with the younger generation coming out of college or engineers in the lower Geographies (asia, india, ...)

@vrq - I do believe your story, not sure about the OP though. I don't think they are turning unaccepted VSPs into ISPs just yet. They might not do it at all. You could still get ISP'd for a number of other reasons, job code being one of them.
They don't send emails to employees getting ISP's ...what a douchebag
@vrq yes, Bain was brought back in and if you recall during SET they benchmarked Intel job codes and number of employees in them against industry standards and in some areas where we were over the benchmark they cut. Looks like more of the same. architects, PMs, developers, managers, I don't remember what else from SET days.
Actually, i believe this post. I guy i've worked with since 2000 got this dreaded letter as well last week. But its a little more complicated than that. He was given the ERP as well as the VSP. He's been at Intel for 26 years and is currently a G9. He's been in his grade for 10 years, but otherwise an outstanding worker.
He said apparently this latest round of cuts involved looking through job titles/roles (he's an Architect), and the letter he got basically said effectively they have too many Architects and that his job was being eliminated and that his last day was is near the end of June. He said Intel is going through all their job functions (started with Sales&Marketing) and going right down the line. The letter also went on the say that if you were offered other packages, they would honor it and he could choose one of the other packages offered him. So he took the ERP which allowed him to save his dignity and leave on his own terms and get paid handsomely for doing so. But he is telling his close friends what really happened. He was really angry the first few days after receiving the letter, but has come to terms with it, and is now at peace leaving Intel.
I for one, have no doubt he will find something after this, as he is a kick-a** engineer, but it will be probably at a lot less salary than what Intel was paying him. I'm not worried about him as he said he only wanted to work a couple of additional years. He will probably contract for the next few years to shore up his retirement situation. He's sitting pretty as he will be paid a full years salary so he can choose to take some quality time off and start looking later in the year, or find another job immediately.
It was a bittersweet situation, but he is happy and at peace with it now
