Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Sales Consulting hit hard this week

Heard (more than one source) that Sales Consulting got cut globally across all business units, like 20%

Read this article in "The Street"

https://www.thestreet.com/story/13633809/1/here-rsquo-s-why-oracle-is-pulling-out-all-the-stops-to-boost-its-cloud-profits.html

Is that really a quote that MH said Oracle would be adding "younger, less expensive staff"?

Execs like MH says cloud sells itself, don't need expensive consultants. I had to cut >50% despite doing the heavy lifting selling cloud. Not much future left here.

Larry et al have majorly failed oracle. Failed to see the cloud revolution coming, failed to react even when it was obvious, and now failed to identify the people and resources they need to catch up. Oracle has been bloated with redundant legacy software for so long now, that this kind of trimming is well past due.

If you did not get laid off, you need to update your resume and look for the next step in your career. You do not want to get blindsided. More layoffs are likely coming. Companies do not stop at one layoff regardless of what they say.

I am pretty confident this was a numbers game. When I was a pre-sales manager at another tech titan the message from above was cut 10% each quarter no what. I got to a certain point where I was cutting core people (not just the poor performers or the new folks) and it it gave me ulcers letting go great talent. So the lesson learned to those who were cut. It's not you. Management unfortunately had to executive from above. You've got great Oracle experience and many companies would die to have that experience working for them.

Look at previous threads for other groups that were laid off. Development was hit pretty hard in the last few months. If you are not working on cloud, your job might as well be obsolete. Security and Enterprise Manager were hit hard.

Sales reps were fired midweek. Sales Consultants and management was fired. 20% across the board. North America saw a 25% haircut.

To those who were let go - I hope you find greener pastures and look back on this as a positive event. I'm sure it's scary as heck right now (but maybe somewhat liberating?).

I am curious about the specific groups affected, if anyone's willing to share.

From the people I have spoken too, the cuts were across the board. I think it was up to certain managers to reduce headcount no matter what and they decided where to cut. In some cases it just seems very random. Some get rid of weaker players. Some get rid of high cost employees. Some look at what coverage helps after the cuts and goes for redundant heads. Others get rid of those who were recently hired.

Can also confirm, I was laid off today too. 30% of my team took a hit. Did anyone sense a pattern to the layoffs? It wasn't geo-location, salary, performance, time-in-grade, or anything that was obvious to us. I would be interested to understand how the layoffs were decided.

They are claiming these are the only cuts for the year and that everyone is safe. What else do you expect them to say? Rumor is that more cuts are on the way and this is not the last of them. Next cuts could be within 90-120 days.

MH run HP into oblivion and now doing the same at Oracle. Not smart of LE to have hired him, will cost him billions

Key Account program going out the window, Territory Growth Directors and Client Advisors whacked as well. This is not going to work, but will reduce expenses on the short term.

Yeah, its the old HP style with guys like Hurd and Geraffo that don't know how to run anything let alone a sales team. I was an SCM and been with Oracle for 27 years and got Whacked... Don't know where my team will end up, but hey what can you do. Oracle will never sustain the growth and breath if they rely on folks dialing for dollars...

Confirmed. I was laid off yesterday along with many of my colleagues. It was a very sad day.

I am a first level manager and was also a casualty in yesterday's layoffs. Oracle wants to increase the Sales Rep to Sales Consulting ratio and laid off not only Sales Consultants, but mangers and in at least one case VPs.

Oracle is also laying off sales reps. The reps they keep don't get paid for on-premise software anymore, only cloud. If you do get paid, it's on a much lower rate. For those not laid off, they will be looking to get out. Oracle seems to be ok with the attrition as they pivot to the cloud and use more inside reps selling these solutions over the phone. They work at a much lower salary and bonus structure. Oracle will probably save a ton of money but these reps will probably be much less effective. Who knows how this will end up. It seems to be the HP playbook. Oracle just wants to be a commodity IT provider.
