Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Medical Insurance After Layoff

I do not work for Intel, I work for a financial services company. My company has no posts here, and I see there is thriving community on Intel's board - so am posting this in hope someone will respond:

What are my options as it relates to Medical Insurance after layoffs - I know that I am making many assumptions, however I feel I've covered pretty much everything...

Thank you in advance!

Across the USA you should be eligible for COBRA. But that means you will be required to pay 100% of the premium for your plan going forward for a maximum of 18 months, instead of the typical 20% or less you may have been paying. They can kick you off the group plan after that.

So if you pay $400 a month from your paycheck for family coverage, you may find that the actual premium is $2000 a month!

In Oregon, the Democratic Party leftists (they can't run anything except a one-armed black lesbian theater company, and only so long as they don't have to break even financially) had a $300M boondoggle that resulted in no working healthcare exchange website and everything fell back to healthcare.gov as with some other States.

Losing insurance is a qualifying lifetime event so you can find your own insurance plan, often cheaper with greater choice of managing your own costs with respect to copay, coinsurance and out of pocket expenses.

Good luck.

if you are eligible for COBRA you can continue to pay the premium and stay covered for up to 18 months

I haven't yet gotten into the thick of this but my understanding is that cobra insurance kicks in if your company offers it and it should match your current medical plan/deductibles. I'll be calling the cobra contact given to me by HR to verify. The other option is to take the Obama care route -- search it online. Open enrollment is sometime in the Fall but life changing circumstances apply if you need it sooner...you can go online to mock up what it would cost.
