Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Raise = RA?

I've been performing very well at work in the last 1+ years, and got recognized by my manager, 2nd line too.

However, I wonder if I should talk to them about a raise given the current RA situation. People in my team, neighbor teams even some upper management people were just being RAed recently.

My last raise was last year May...and probably not until late Sep this year for company-wise raise...Just feel upset with all this, doing good jobs, great job with any reward...

The concern about being laid-off discourage me to ask for a hike that I think I deserve.

If you are not happy you should be seriously looking elsewhere and if you get any traction make it known to your manager that you are planning to leave. IF they think you have critical skills you might get a retention payment or promotion or a small increase. Most likely they don't care about you and you'll end up RA'd with a bit of cash or leaving on your own for something better. Get active and be prepared to act on an offer and one way or another you'll be better off. Of course if your skills aren't in demand or you're late in your career you're pretty much screwed, in which case just keep working, take whatever they pay for as long as possible and hope for the best.

I agree with @HKnpT0i-3beh. For too many years we all drank the Kool-Aid and were led to believe that hard work at IBM will lead to bigger and better things at the company. But the sad reality is that our raises were planned awhile ago by upper management.

My advice is to update your skills at IBM while sending out résumés to prospective employers. If you find a better job elsewhere then please seize the opportunity. In the meantime you should do your job at IBM quietly and diligently until a better position arises elsewhere.

Your raise, if any, is planned well in advance by your manager and his peers and his manager. Asking for a raise won't affect when, or if, you'll get one.

I'd ask, but don't just go in asking for more money because you feel like you already earned it.

Everyone wants more money, and your manager probably already has a line of your peers who feel like they're overdue for something.

You should ask the manager about new opportunities to demonstrate yourself, or if they know about any stretch goals you can take on that will let you get some exposure within your organization.

That's the kind of stuff that will get you bonuses in the short term, and promotions/raises in the long-term.

I agree with -aoc. Understand that you are working for a company that is desperate to save money any way they can, and trying to bail out a boat full of holes. Nobody is getting raises, even band 10s and DEs. Are you in that league? Only the CEO (huge raise and $5million bonus last year) and board (huge bonuses this year) get raises, and they performed at a 4 rating level (sixteen straight quarters of declining revenue). I'd try to stay under the radar and hope your performance keeps you off the list. It's not about that though, it's about replacing high (US, Canada, Europe, Australia, etc) salaries with much lower ones (India, etc). Without a major gift to hide behind like IBM had in 1Q with the Japan tax rebate of $1b, it's doubtful they will be able to hide the real truth in the 2Q results. That's when the wheels should really start coming off the cart.

Forget about a raise. Start looking for another job outside IBM before you get RA'd. It is easier to get a job while you are still employed. At IBM you are simply a cog in a huge machine. You will be fired As soon as they figure out how to replace you with a less expensive cog. Get out while you can.
