Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

About to be riffed in IT .. requesting advice from former riffed

I'm a 50+ unix/linux/windows sysadmin in the nyc metro area.

Ive heard you can survive by doing consultant/contract work.

My wife works so I have benefits.

Does anyone know how consultant/contractor market is in nyc area

(live in NJ) or NJ area ? ballpark rates of pay per hour ?

As a sysadmin you should be able to find work. esp NY/NJ area is very good . I would recommend putting your resume out and start hunting now and it may take time to land something that fits you. If you are open to travelling you should definitely see more options open up. Another recommendation woudl be to brush up programming/scripting. you might be able to ride the devops wave.... and most important.. NETWORK!! call you friends, former bosses etc LINKEDIN!!

All teh best

OP, Your saving grace is that you're a sysadmin. You may have to branch out into shared hosting ("cloud") platforms, but there's always someone, somewhere looking for an admin.

About 80% of the personnel taking calls in the FSC are your age with equal or more tech experience and a few have graduate degrees on top of that. Corp America has an insatiable taste for offshoring & H1B applicants. You can try hiding your age on your resume but if you do get to an interview, it will be short once they see your age. NJ/NY may as well be Calcutta on the Hudson. Good luck.

Having a Masters seems to help. Have you looked into an Executive MBA program or something like that? Also if you are sure you are going to get Rifd this time around, perhaps try to jump to another position at Verizon, it might help stave off things for a while. I don't think anyone we know went the contracting route so sorry, no info on that other than this article on what you might encounter in the outsourcing rat race. http://www.infoworld.com/article/3004501/h1b/proof-that-h-1b-visa-abuse-is-rampant-in-tech.html

look at Monster.com, Career builder.com and Dice.com

If need put the resume on them, and wait for head hunter to call.

No need to contact the companies directly, does not work

Don't show anywhere in your resume a date that shows that you are 50+. Don't show experience before year 2000. Don't mention the date of your college graduation. Make sure you clean up LinkedIn profile accordingly.

IT head hunters, research companies and jobs you would enjoy, networking in and out of work, utilities, other competitors, contracting work, 2 page resume, LinkedIN. You don't say if you hit the rule of 75 or formal education. Govt work

Union trolls are everywhere! They don't seem to understand their union bosses ended the strike. Typical.

With the valuable skills you've earned on EWA assignment, you may want to consider a position overseas. Don't forget to take the 188 you got from Verizon. You'll need it.
