Dude, intel already lost, to compete in modems this late is defeat. The big money was made years ago, now it is a free for all with lots of cheaper chinese companies all with the same know how.

What is intel's competitive advantage? I think the design came from a small group in Germany that intel paid billions for, if it was such a good profit center why would the other company sell. Well I tell you it is because intel paid so much, and the business was declining so they took the money! Guess who got holding the bag, lots of money spent and a bad market?

Now where are these chips made? They are made as many have already said at TSMC. So TSMC is paid money by Intel, then Intel can sell for a loss. You think intel overhead is more or less than their competitors? Do you think TSMC is giving Intel a deal? I doubt Intel is viewed as more special than any other user of TSMC fab.

Now if the numbers are right boy Intel's share is small. Apple is rumored to have ordered more than 70 million iPhones, so Intel's share is small, like their chance of success!

@iqm - Agreed ... looks like a clear case of tactical victory, strategic defeat. Time will tell.

Its unclear that this is a long term win for Intel. Its probably wrapping dollars around every part that it sells the modem into (remember the tablet wars? Intel wrapped dollars around 40million tablets). Its doing this to get a foot-hold into the business with the hope that these orders will continue and provide a business.

Intel has so far failed to demonstrate that it can do anything other than make an x86 chip. And it found the domination of the x86 business a really long time back.

Its highly unlikely that Intel will be able to leverage this into a long term gain.

As per the article if Qualcomm was getting $15 a piece, then Intel is most likely going to get $10 or lower per piece. I don't really think this is a war which Intel can win. At the best Intel can target 50% volume which i think is possible in 2018.

Apple is declining and with good reason. Post Jobs it is back to stock firm where no one cares about anything but profit. IOT is hyped but winning IOT is like trying to win the "open source community". Good luck with that one.

The war is lost even before it began. About other two sides in this war: TSMC will win this war, as well as Apple is loosing it.

Apologies offered to you, OP. Please, try again wit some other INTEL game. IOT, for example. ;-)
