Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Verizon is being spreadsheet-managed by stock-a-holics

It is the self fulfilling Verizon "change energizes us" prophesy:

Start:

We sell less, so let's fire some sales, cut some products, sell some property and cut the marketing budget in two, so that hopefully we can improve our numbers.

Guess what happens, we get a bad reputation, people leave and are not longer motivated so sell even less than the anticipated decrease.

So let us also cut the investments in new, highly strategic programs, like Go90, public cloud (huh?), thingspace (empty box)

Congratulations: Collect one penny for being a DUMB spreadsheet-strategist, then Go back to Start:

@2xay.....wireline is profitable quarter after quarter, despite Lowell & his cronies lack of knowledge as to how to run the business successfully. The only reason the remaining landline areas have yet to be sold off is because the corrupt executive board can't decide how they will spin off the fact that all of a sudden wireless isn't as profitable all of a sudden. No more landline, means nowhere to hide billions of excess wireless expenses. Don't forget genius, wireless was not profitable for it's first 10 years of existence. Where do you think all of that money came from? Wireline always has been and always will be, wirelesses bank. Quit continually trying to make it a union vs. non-union theme. All we have right now is a bunch of old, washed up executives, that are filling up their bank accounts before riding off into the sunset and leaving behind massive debt and destruction. Enjoy the rest of your Koolaid.

"All the wireline profit was used to upgrade wireless, educate yourself"

Really. Has the wireline generated such profits? Wouldn't they have been sold like the other franchise areas if they were in fact profitable. It certainly doesn't generate cash flow, so I don't know how you divert negative cash flow to wireless, like you think. You are just a bitter old union guy that is no longer needed. You will be part of a sale, most likely. Then dumped.

Verizon used to be in business to provide the best products & services, customer service and contribute to U.S. economic growth by offering the opportunity to have a career. Now, it's 100% about "the dividend." Instead of management making sure that work is being done properly, the main focus is on "hurry up and get it done." Bad business practice that is supported by a horrible executive board. Verizon could easily dominate both the in home wireline and wireless mobile service areas if they had the right people in charge.

In the meantime, we'll just keep wasting billions on bad investments, selling off all of our assets and cutting 10's of thousands of jobs in an attempt to cover up bad decision making. What once was one of the greatest companies on the planet, is now a pathetic shell of itself. Better matters? I don't think so.

OP - Next time you are somewhere with more than five people make a note of how many on on their cellphones and how many are on their land lines. If you really want to blame someone for Verizon decline look to T-Mobile they started the cell phone price war that made everyone tighten their belts. It would of been much better for employees (not the consumer) if T had bought t-mobile.

You left out the conference call. The more calls each day the more profit comes your way.

I grow tired of saying this. Verizon wireless will be competing against Frontier(verizon) wireline for customers. WIreless will be rolling out a service to complete with Fios. Wait and see.

To the OP: Ok, we got your point. What would you do differently, given that Wireline is declining and there is $30B investment in the ground? Don't forget that Wireless is softening too, not going to make much on low ARPU tablets an unlimited data plans. I suspect you wouldn't increase the marketing budget either and would be tempted to consolidate real estate too.
