Portrait studio space has been used as a dumping ground for racks and displays. It was a mess. Broken bits everywhere. They made a makeshift curtain to block it from view. Well after about 2 years of this yesterday they cleaned it out. Wondering if this means anything. Any changes to other sears portrait studio space?

If the store is company owned Eddie can close, sell or lease it out. There are some company own stores that are leased out and are peddlers malls. Stores are leased out to who ever will sign a contract. There is a company owned building in Clarksville, IN that used to be a Kmart. The Kmart was closed and has been a peddlers mall for the last 6-7 years.
You may be on to something. My store is leased. Also after 30 years they put a handicapped ramp on the sidewalk leading to the lower level entrance. Funny thing is once you get inside the doors there are stairs down or escalator up. Nothing for handicapped people.
the thing about SHC is you are encouraged to NOT think and Not utilize. I'm going to go dumb. If they want a dumb non-thinker I can do that. It is sad. I grew up when America Works. Now I work to pay for 'the one's that don't work'. I Work!
When our optical center was cleaned out the next step was the liquidators coming in and using it as a staging area. Not to say that your store will close but keep an eye out; Also, when they start to fix doors, paint, fix the floors and take down storage space this is pre-liquidation time. Don;t let them tell you it isnt. It will take a few months and then they will tell everyone the store is closing. This is if your store is leased. I dont know what happens if sears holdings owns the store.
May be cleaning it out for a liquidator office.
I wouldn't worry too much unless your building is leased and is desirable to potential tenants or buyers. If that were the case, other projects would be taking place at the same time, such as pressure washing, floor conditioning, painting, etc. You probably have a SM/ASM with some initiative or a DM with a head on their shoulders. So many stores have empty portrait/optical/hearing/tax centers that are just sitting empty and looking neglected.
I turned my portrait area into seasonal display (lawn tractors/grills/AC in spring/summer, Christmas trees and accessories in winter). My old optical center is a clearance/991 area for appliances and lawn and garden. Naturally, district management doesn't like my idea of utilizing wasted, unlit and neglected space (which is quite frankly an eyesore) and turning it into a productive, neat and shoppable area, but then again they answer to Eddie, the guy who has no interest in keeping Sears a viable retailer.
