Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

equivalent pay in San diego CA when compared to Portland Oregon

Took VSP from Intel. Got an offer from a small sized company ( less than 500 ). Was in validation role at Intel. what can i ask for a base pay of 100k that i made in Portland. please share your thoughts.

Family of 4. 2 kids wife stay at home & had a small house at hillsboro.

Can i afford a house in CA?. How Costly is the House/Rent.

Thanks

Poor bastard, 100k here and living <30' from work. If you are in a sweet location in CA good luck anything less than 600k for see and further home. Other stuff like car, food and taxes are in the noise compared to housing . Use zillow and be ready to be shocked

There's no such thing as a stay-at-home wife unless you make at least $200-250k base pay to live in the nice part of San Diego.

You can afford a butler if you were to take the same mortgage payment from SD to Oregon I would think.

Intel in OR pays very very high compared to other companies. I would bet its not much different that you'd get in SD. Housing is very expensive, but like someone else here said, its not so much the price, but the size of the house and the land it sits on. Expect a bit more in price and a much smaller house. Rents run probably in the $2500-$3500 area for your standard 1700-2200 sqft house house inland san diego. traffic is 900x worse.

What you can be paid in SD has little to do with what it will cost to live there relative to OR. The question is, what will the market in SD bear as a salary for the job?

Do your research on what the job pays in that region. Your future employer DOES NOT CARE about your potential expenses.

OP is actually Intel HR TR0LL. IN A REAL SITUATION, this WOULD NOT BE A difficult decision to make.

Thank you very much, @HZcViAx-yve. I already wrote several posts here, with strong/critical.warning that INTEL HR and Press Release/Legal trolls are playing games/diverting/getting you out of the game... Killing your anger, your truthful emotions toward company which abandoned you all to save their dedicated servants, since you (most of you) are very good engineers, but you have NO IDEA what these cock-roaches, predators, aggressive con-men, animal creatures from Dark Side, villains... Complete out of empathy non-humane machine is trying to silent your anger, with ALL RIGHTS you all have to piss on them, to put them down... To diminish these INTEL BOD pets/hamsters, their dark servants for beggars' reward: fist of few bloody bucks!

It is on your own perils, dear ISPs/VSPs.

INTEL HR has no ANY mercy

When you live in Oregon, it's a matter of having a job vs not having a job. If OP googles, there is plenty of information he can find on the web relevant to his decision making .. Why is he wasting our time ?

P.S. - your his wife needs to get off her useless arr$S and share the load of bringing in an income.

If you have a $350K home in Oregon , I would say a similar home would cost you around $575-600K in SD. Negotiate your salary well since things are much expensive there. Also note that 100K might be your base, buy Intel pays bonuses , pits in money in your 401K, SPP, RSU's, etc, so do factor all that I would say add 20% on your base and that's what you should convert to cost of living calculators available online.

@jpw not too bad, Intel probably low balled you when you started. as the other poster mentioned your tcomp is probably closer to 130- factor in a 15% geo diff and you are at 150 fair enough provided your skills are solid.

You can't ask for an equivalent. You have to negotiate with what the prevailing rate is in SD and it can vary significantly from corp to corp. Working in socal before we made offers to people from OR and WA and they balked because the pay was only slightly higher than they made in OR. Housing was a big differential. Now not so much do to inflated Portland prices. You can buy stuff for $600-$700K but it will be significantly smaller. Don't count on a 3000-4000sqft place for that. More like 2000sqft., but it can be done.

You won't find other jobs in OR for what you do and SD is better than taking something in the Bay area. Go for it and make it work.

Also if you'll need two incomes to be able to afford the nice neighborhood with top notch schools, with a salary in engineering. Like $170-$200k at least for your size of household to live comfortably.

Poway/Rancho Penasquitos has the good balance between affordable homes and descent schools.

Depends on what kind of neighborhood you want to live in and whether you care about the schools.

You'll need 4- 5 bedrooms. Homes in good neighborhood with descent schools are just a little under $1 mil.

If you want top notch schools then it'll be from $1.2 mil and up. Check redfin.com to get an idea.

Be aware that bonuses are not high as intel at most other companies. So you will want to negotiate a higher base pay.

how long were you at Intel? if you were hired at 100k you could probably ask for more in CA. If you snuck up on 100k over the years inside Intel all bets are off. Too many variables. Let them make you an offer.
