Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Disappointing to see so many expats still taking Americans' jobs.

As I walk through the halls, I ask myself, "How can there still be so many Canadians, Venezuelans, Nigerians, Arabs, etc. working here, when Americans were laid off that were just as qualified and could have filled these spots?" I know they kept the Venezuelans around just because they had nothing to go back to but now there are Americans that have no chance of getting jobs in this industry for the next year or so. We are in America, right? Why not take care of our own first.

What in God's name are you babbling on about? Oh thats right! You have that religion we all have to tiptoe around and give you as much time off as you want for your holidays. No foreigner takes care of me. I dont know of any expats more qualified than the Americans. Period. Go back to your own country if we are so rude or bad to you. Dont let the door slam you in the butt on the way out.

Because you do not know how to take care of yourself. That is why we have some many foreigners now naturalized as US citizens to take care of you according to corporate America. Our corporations need to make money not to give you money or to take care of you. We care about our shareholders, who are mainly Chinese, Indians, and sheikhs from KSA. You own nothing. Why do you think you have British, French supervisors in your company? While you are walking through the halls I bet those people are in front of their workstations working taking care of the business. Is that right? Haven’t you noticed you also have a VP that is Indian? Please, make us to the shareholders a favor and go back to work and stop walking through the halls and spending hours drinking Colombian coffee.

I think some of you do not understand what American expats in other countries do. I worked in 3 3rd world countries while at COP. My job was to train the locals. When done, I was shipped out. My pay depended on how inconvenient and dangerous it was to live in that particular county. The higher the danger the higher the pay (Venezuela for example).

What I don't understand is why we have expats in our American offices. Are they training the Americans?, now that is a joke. Why are they being paid higher salaries to live in America? That does not make sense!!!

I'll be very happy if most expats in the US are repatriated back to their home BU for the sake of cost saving to save American jobs. BUT, same thing should happen to higher number of US expats in China, Australia, Norway, UK, Malaysia, Indonesia who are paid higher than locals with many benefits like rest and relax, premium allowance, housing rental allowance, you name it. Switch them back and let each BU develop their local payroll people

The comments in this discussion highlight why Conoco is circling the bowl. Glad I don't work there.

We have a few Venezuelans in our office. They are very proactive. Venezuela went to a 2 day work week just recently, our Venezuelans have been doing that for years now.

After having worked with COP in 3 different countries, I have concluded that America is probably the only country that does not protect jobs for its own citizens. Hell, those 3 countries I worked in shipped out the Americans ASAP!!!.

Then Conoco must do more evaluation on what they(expats) are doing in their rooms, just don't believe what they say because some of them are talking and doing bullshit things. It's definitely not a "cost saving" attempt if Conoco select the wrong expats. "Expats who really have proven skills and give the real contribution". Cost saving means efficient (not wasting your money and time)..

how are there still expats? I thought after the last layoff all expats were sent back to their native countries. That's at least what happened to the Canadian division. All canadians in the US and England were sent back and the enligsh and american expats were sent back as well. I know a few in the bottom as well as the very top, so I'm not sure what you are talking about.

I find it hilarious that people here still think being good at your job actually matters, as i the best and brightest are still at the company. See the previous thread, where an HR guy comments on them not even interviewing current COP employees....

ConocoPhillips doesn't have any operations in Nigeria as that asset was sold off a couple of years ago. There are no Nigerian expats. Americans are expats abroad you know so stop whining and start being the best at what you do. You can't expect for Americans to be expats overseas and other nationals not come to the US.

Cut the sh-- the government gives COP a break or are made to give these jobs to these folks. Somewhat of a charity case if you think about it. The Venezuela the columbians and the Russians are not the best in the room I have worked with many and trust me we have far better caliber Americans than what Conoco has decided to bring into the company. Don't be fooled folks Conoco will do what they need to I order to satisfy the government as well as benefit their bottom line. These folks need to be shipped out if the shoe was on the other foot you can bet your assthey would be shipping Americans out of Columbia Venezuela and Russia. So cut your sh-- out its the truth. You don't belong her you countries are in trouble and we are not your savior. Conoco does an injustice to the American people by laying off Americans of higher caliber and keeping these folks employed. Truly unbelievable I hope Trump changes this because Hillary will not.

Glitter/Gold--I think you would be singing a different tune if you were the one that was laid off while many expats were kept in your group, and you were a highly rated employee that always did an excellent job but happened to be the oldest (40s) and most highly paid in the group. And never complained about being sexually harassed or always overlooked because you were not a loudmouth.

Now go grab another PBR and shut the hell up , your making the rest of us look bad.

The best thing I have seen COP do is the way they have treated the Venezuelan nationals that were hired. COP showed a dedication to its people by offering those that were interested jobs in the US when we pulled out due to outrageous tyrannical populism. The same populist fear that leads to the ignorant hate bred by these posts against those that should be welcomed and appreciated.

ConocoPhillps in a multinational company as we all know. Not only is there multinational expats working for ConocoPhillips in the US there is also US expats working in other countries. The number of US expats working in other countries far outnumber the multinational expats working in the US for ConocoPhillips. Without question this company does support US workers. With that being said it still has a responsibility to develop employees for other countries and business units and the best place to do that is right here in the US. Over the past 18 months or so the company has reduced the amount of expats in a cost saving attempt and they will continue to look at the need for expats on a case by case basis. As others have stated, be the best in the room and you won't have to worry about expats "stealing" your job. Perhaps you may have the opportunity to obtain an expat assignment one day and you'll see first hand that expats are needed across all business units.
