Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

IOS?

I am thinking of using IOS to transfer internally because the morale in my department is at rock bottom. The policy on the IOS page states that I can apply internally without letting my manager knows until I get an offer from the other department. I am not planning to tell my manager anyways because we have bad relationship and he is very unprofessional. Leaving Q is not an option for me right now because I have kids at school and house mortgage, otherwise I would have left couple of years ago.

Has anybody done the IOS transfer successfully behind their manager? Please share your experience.

To me, you have to treat that as a new job search, meaning you wont say you are leaving a company unless you have another job at hand, right? Same. It is better your mgmt gets to know last.

IOS, is a policy which is an "Eye Wash". No one replies to it also.

Your best bet would be to shift jobs! trust me it is easy. Usually you need to be in a team for over 4+ years with a same job profile. Then managers generally oblige. I know of folks who have been in same team for like 5+ years and then they have IOS'd. But IOS usually happens under a same Director.

Its very very rare that you will be allowed to shift ORGs. ie from One VP to Another! :P

Trust me grass looks greener on the other side always! :P

Just go ahead and apply, but good luck. even if you apply for postings most likely you'll never hear from HR. That's been my experience and heard from many others who've tried and seen the same thing. Its a big company fragmented into groups competing with one another, so don't expect to get preference over an external applicant. Also it has to be outside of your VP's organization, otherwise he has to sign off on the transfer which very few VPs will do. I'm almost convinced IOS is just one of those made up policies in qualcomm that was just intended to make the org look better. The attitude is just about execution, get the right guy for the job with as little investment as possible, so really ios is like just applying thru the external system.

In these current conditions, you might as well GTFO Q.

Sad but true. Fom my experience, VPs are very reluctant to ruffle another VPs feathers... They seems to be more interested in catering to their interest and the inter-relationships than taking care of the needs of the employee wanting to make a move to another group/division.

It should not be that hard. If the employee possess the skills to join another team, management should go to the limits to make this move happen and retain the good employee. But looks like management does the contrary: makes the employee move really painful and tortures them before they move. (if at all they are able to do so) by breathing down their neck and ensuring their every minute before departure is filled with some dumb tasks.

I have transferred to other groups in the past. I never applied through the online system until I was pretty much guaranteed the job. You have to sneak and talk directly to the hiring manager in the new job. They'll understand you don't want to go through the formal process. Lots of people do it this way.

Don't kid yourself. HR Sees every IOS transfer that goes through unless you use back doors and don't use the actual computer system until you have the offer. Best bet is tell your manager. Better you than they find it out grouch rumor and gossip or HR. Tell them why you want to leave. No threats just facts. Otherwise they will find out anyway and then you are someone they do t trust and if the manager is lousy they can cause problems from a transition point: i have seen it happen over and over again:

this one is tricky....many groups are simply not allowing this to happen....at some point your VP will come to know of it.... not a risk you should take..... things are not very good....
