Thread regarding Whole Foods Market Inc. layoffs

New Article Trashing WFM

This is an article from the Motley Fool ... John Mackey is on the board and they still put out an article saying that WFM is pretty much doomed.

"Whole Foods simply doesn't have a sustainable competitive advantage. In my experience, there's nothing more important to the success of an investment than the sustainable competitive advantages of the underlying company. I have the utmost respect for what Whole Foods has done for our country. We eat better food now, and are much more educated about where it comes from, thanks to Whole Foods. Unfortunately, the company did such a good job of doing this -- and making so much cash from it -- that the competition caught on. And when it did, there was nothing left for Whole Foods to offer that others couldn't. That's a great thing for Americans looking to eat a better diet, but not so great for Whole Foods shareholders."

"[Mackey] is NOT changing capitalism, the planet, or his underwear"

This made me laugh way too hard, thanks! I needed that!

Nobody needs WFM to buy organic/natural products. For example, Publix carries Synergy kombucha, coconut oil, coconut water, sprouted tofu, organic soymilk, Annie's and Amy's and Food Should Taste Good and just about everything else. Oh, but one thing you can't get anywhere else is Frankie's Olive Oil. LOLOLOLOL

Motley has independent writers (within limits). There is no agenda other than the realization that putting Mackey on the board was a huge PR disaster for a firm that advises investors. Now that it's clear that (gasp) this burnout is NOT changing capitalism, the planet, or his underwear, and is merely rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic to do ANYTHING to keep handing out stock to the insiders and regional bigwigs (Is it hush money? Hmmmm), Motley feels an obligation to start asking the serious pointed questions they should have been asking for several years. They're just playing catch-up. The next step should be to replace Mackey on their board with an independent outside journalist.

OK Folks, let's think about this. There was a REASON this was posted from Motley. There has to be some kind of wheeling and dealing going on here. What it is, I'm not sure, but. Let's not be Fools.

We were always a niche market but mackey and them had to bilk some of the venture capitalist stockholder class..now everybody can sell our products cheaper and make up there margins on the tide, coca cola and cheap housewares like mops.

@ Hx2LXQa-luk - RIGHT ON, well said. My STL told my team that I just " up and left, no word". He was new in the store and I had been there for 11 years so my team knew he lied. Jerk.

Celebrities or just rich sh-- f---s wouldn't want to be sent a Kroger, they need to be seen in an Whole Foods to prove they have that type of disposable income.

Indeed, WF won a war but are losing a battle. Folks are more aware of healthier eating and the issues with a wide variety of conventional food, but they kind of don't care really. Prices are one thing, Doritos and Mountain Dew are another. If a store can do the Trinity, conventional, natural and organic, why not pick my Seventh Generation Biodegradable Eco-Friendly Sustainable Soap Placemats and also the slop of high-fructose goods at one stop shop - for wayyyy less than WF.

WF will never give in to lowering it's pricing. It's insane. That's the one key they will not turn. The profits they make with their padded margins are great but yeah, WHO'S GONNA PAY FOR THE TRACK LIGHTING?

For sure, the BEST part of WF was truly the knowledgeable and friendly team members but they just took a sh-- on us so who cares. Funny how 11 years of my life and dedication was typed up on one sheet of paper that said " You either go or take this other ridiculous position and start over ".

My hope now is that all the f--- faced leaderships that pop up on this site, take a second to remove the conservative-FOX News-businessman-bullshit and consider what we are talking about. Spare us the jargon of saving the whatever and preserving the whatever OR my favorite - " You made the choice to leave. "

HA! Choice.

Motley Fool is finally having to tell it like it is. They received (and deserved) withering criticism for compromising their independence by putting Rahodeb on their board in the first place. They justified it by saying that (incredibly) "Mackey is changing capitalism and so are we." What a load of rubbish! Well now it's clear that Mackey hasn't changed capitalism and does nothing to live up to the fantasy world described in his book, or at least nothing more than any other company that claims to be "changing the world." So in this context Motley Fool is finally having to tell its readers the bare-knuckled truth, although they are still giving Whole Foods too much credit. Whole Foods was one of MANY companies, organizations and individuals arguing for more natural and organic food and body care over the past 40 years. Whole Foods is a 90s-era "roll-up" that hit a brick wall 10 years ago when the Wild Oats acquisition was overturned. That's when they admitted to the judge that they were "just another grocery store" and nothing special. And now all those other grocery stores, warehouse clubs and online retailers are pretty much just like Whole Foods but many of them also sell Tide and Coke. Local is everywhere. Organic is everywhere. Natural is everywhere. Unless you just really need track lighting, high prices and a lot of baloney about changing the world, you don't need WFM at all.
