Anyone wants a bet that this will not the fate of Altera, 5 years hence, by which time BK would have bilked a few million RSUs and decamped to some tech advisory role in US government?
Mcafee added zero value to Intel.
It was ill conceived from the start.
Anyone with a brain could have thought through this and avoided doing it in the first place.
When the acquisition was announced I remember Wall Street analysts asking questions and not understanding the deal. PSO said "just you wait", it will take a few years for this to play out. I seriously think that there was NO PLAN at all. Just a random power play by Renee and a board of directors asleep at the wheel.

I got to leave by choice last year. Last year is when the Monumental integration of McAfee into Intel completed!!!! So HR and all the systems that took years to consolidate ......all the processes that gad to be adopted. All the ackryinyms learned. All a waste of time.
This is called sheer wastage of money by visionless leadership. It has been just a few months since they spent millions of $ on integration. Now, they want to sell it off.. Pathetic strategy

@1qkx Altera must have had something that Intel wanted to kill, maybe an x86 emulator or coprocessor.
In that respect the aquisition was a success. As far as Mcafee maybe they just got into his stash?
Intel buying Mcafee makes about as much sense as Google buying McDonald's.

After the acquisition it's been a bonanza for Xilinx, Altera's main competitor. Altera's customers are fearful of Intel and Xilinx is taking a lot of marketshare. Fearful in the sense that they have no idea what Intel will do and can't stake long term dependencies on Altera due to this. Altera has also lost ground in the high end by staking Stratix 10 on Intel 14nm. This is late and won't be sampling until mid 2017 while Xilinx's 16nm TSMC part is already available. Who knows if mid-2017 is optimistic or not? TSMC will have 10nm by then and Xilinx will be even further ahead.
Intel plans to sell Altera in the datacenter with Xeon integration using a closed proprietary protocol while the competitors are choosing and open standard. Gee, what's going to happen there?
Not to mention the insane culture clash that happens with integrating a totally different kind of engineering team. Look at how well Intel custom foundry has been doing...
All of this for an FPGA industry with no growth. Intel tool out Altera at 8 times revenues!!! That's like me selling you a Honda Civic for $150K.
I swear these execs have zero vision. It's like they don't think through any of the consequences of their decisions.
They could have achieved the same thing with a technology licensing deal for far less capital outlay. Instead, these clowns lever up the balance sheet and borrow money we don't have only to piss it away on a venture that doesn't pass even the most elementary analysis.
The level of cluelessness at the top is breathtaking.

More interesting wager will be on the value of Altera 5-6 years from when server market will be sliding and high flying DCG will be fighting to generate cash.

Hardware company buying a software company....you know that is a recipe for failure.
Does mcafee even generate any profit for us? And why were we thinking that we are a security company in the first place?
Intel paid a huge premium for McAfee (like they always do). They'll take a bath on the sale.
McAfee is worth more without the BS of Intel's "virtuous cycle" and unencumbered with Intel executives being forced on them.
They won't get what they paid for it, as they have fallen behind competitors.
@I5IfpyU-dcm: The Bloomberg article says they are trying to sell it to bankers and Renee James is on the board of Citi Bank. Maybe she's a mole sent there to screw over Citi Bank the way Murthy was sent to Intel.
And I suspected this when Intel Security was the only group with zero ISPs. Even HR and Legal had ~1% ISPs.
