Energy and oil in particular has always boomed and busted. Why on earth didn't NOV diversify into scientific instruments, IT contracting, finance, or even other energy like solar in the last 20 years. They bought companies like crazy and all in one basket. Why????

NOV makes equipment that touches more parts of the energy sector than anything other company. We've diversified ourselves in the energy business with is, the largest sector on earth btw.

Why is GE shutting down its banking/real estate arm? Cause it realized you need a core to your business and that core needs to be what your effort goes into.
