This is OP. Thanks for the encouraging and useful tips for some. For those deriding, you are typical of society. when someone is jobless, you call them crap and once they get job, suddenly they are talented or noble. Shame on you guys!
BTW, I'm in early 40s, 16+ at intel. Have a very good resume, but did not post anywhere yet. Looking for very senior (PE) position outside. A couple of recruiters I contacted on linkedin did say I'm over qualified for the positions they have (they were looking for only 6-7 year experienced). I'll keep trying. Thanks

Don't give up hope but as others suggested, sounds like you may need to rework your resume. I'm over 55 but have gotten a dozen calls and real interviews including with big oem's in the last 4w since I left Intel. Taking my time and turning down things that are not a good fit.
Virtually none have cared about anything but my skills and background. Intel as an ex-employer seems to be a non-issue. I show the last 20yrs experience on the resume only. Several companies noted they only care about the last 10 years anyway. Keep resume short, no more than 2 pages, highlight and tune it to the job postings you submit to. Don't lie, but highlight areas you have that hit their requirements. Remove anything that dates you like graduation year. (Show degree/ school but no date). If asked, reason for leaving is Intel laying off 12K and shutting some sites down. No one blinks when I've said that so far. Be flexible and open to new areas to use you skills in.
By the way, Intel hired me at 44 as well, so no one is too old to get a job, even now at 55.
Best of luck to you, it will take a while but you will find something for sure! Look for the right job vs. the fast one and know you're paid enough from Intel to have the luxury of months to look around.
The agony of knowing you will either be out of work permanently or reduced to retail and real estate. From all all the people who have screwed by Intel rejoice in the carnage! Bwahahaha
MOst of the H/W companies are trimming, but slowly so as to not announce. Everyone else prefers either contractors, or RCG's. Most of the ads you see are probably H1B prep fodder where you won't meet "all" the criteria, so won't even get a call. But your resume serves to show that they tried to hire.
Perhaps, if you were at Intel longer than 3 years, trim your resume to Intel only and don't put anything identifying your age (no talking about how you worked on i960 or 8051, or when you graduated, OK?)
You may get more calls, and if you show up to interview, they'll freak out because now they have an age discrimination panic on their hands....
If you aren't getting interviews then it's probably an issue with your resume and online presence. I get interview requests weekly and my first SW job was 20+ years ago. I only show the last ~7 years of work though. Recruiters can care less about the awesome PCX library I made ages ago with Turbo C++ and network programming with Novell Netware etc.
All I have to do is add a minor change to my indeed.com resume and interview requests come flooding in (it must be a sorting option recruiters from indeed have so the resume goes back to the top) The same thing probably helps on other sites too.
Same situation, but in SW. There are tons of SW jobs. Some of them have almost 100% requirements that match my background. Working with LHH and have even applied for government jobs with 3rd of Intel compensation, but not a single call for interview. My long years at Intel say I am old (I'm in my early 50's). I know some will say because I suck. That might be right, but employers don't know it yet because they have not interviewed me.

If you are over 40, you're probably not going to get any replys. If you do, they will probably say "over qualified." That's PC for too old. I went over 10 years after I was laid off without even getting an interview.

simple answer is that the isp/vsp folks have been blacklisted by other employers.. they know the bad apples were let go at a particular time and don't even bother looking at them.. you can thank BK for it.
