Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Massive layoffs due in iCDG as Aicha confirms possibility of 3rd wave

Due to socialist constraints in Germany many ISP have been converted to VSPs with low uptake. Now Aicha is 30% short of her ACT target. If that incompetent Germans cannot be persuaded to leave there will be another round of cuts in the US approximately 50% firings again.

@sts - Just realizing how badly my loyalty to the company was damaged by all this ACT and Murthy pervasiveness of the cloud Bs.

Well who would have thought that the IFX10+ offer where Infineon reduced their workforce years ago is still the best offer anybody has seen so far. That was 1,8month salary per years of service afair.

So nobody taking an Intel VSP is no surprise whatsoever if the choice is between "voluntarily" giving up your job and get a temporary ban for the state unemployment insurance or still collect another 6-12 months salary and get the boot when the site is closed.

I expect every single employee who gets ISPed to go through the lawyer + courts route adding significant expense on Intel side. The "usual" severence pay in court is 0,5 month of salary per years of service, so still a bad deal, but fully worth it if you know the company has to go through 3 instances and pay 300$ per hour for the lawyer. Mind you they might even epicly fail their courtcases as you have to really explain the judge why getting rid of sw engineer xyz while the company is making good profit is necessary and why there are job openings for sw engineer ABC at the same time and could you not train up xyz to do ABC?!?!?!

@IBgGwyX-lss. Where in the US could they cut headcount further? First, the stealth focal will convert remaining VSPs and ERPs to ISP. Second, I'm not technical, but I assume there are some legacy technical projects or even newer ones with diminishing return that could go. Third, admins and support people are great HC reduction targets. I know of Director-level leaders who were left admin-less after ACT with no signs of any backfilling. Fourth, some functions that are currently all blue badge could easily be outsourced, similar to the way we have outsourced health benefits, stock, retirement and of course security and cafes--HR rank and file comes to mind, once they've gotten through implementing ACT. Fifth, some very expensive operations like brand marketing and fancy events should be looked at very closely for ROI--the InsideOut traveling shows and the beethoven's 5th TV spots come to mind. Lastly, some smaller sites are bound to be closed down after the dust settles.

I worked for a sw company back in the 90s that hit a rough patch. It was very hard to 'fire' employees in Germany. With one sales manager there, it took almost 5 years (appeals, pregnancy--can't fire a pregnant worker--medical leaves, maternity leaves, etc) and she had to be given a very good package to finally exit. In essence you don't fire workers there, you persuade them to leave on their own. Usually with a very good severance or just plain mental and legal attrition or until they find something better. That's why with the beginning of ACT, Intel management always had the proviso that timing and terms could vary in the regions depending on local laws. In Ireland, for example, even the ISPs got a full 2 years pay; nobody in the U.S., let alone an ISP, got that.

It is of course possible to throw out workers in Germany, even if the company is not in financial trouble. Just stick to the procedures.

Assuming that that the worker did not seriously violate the CoC:

  1. Inform the worker that he will have to go

  2. The worker appeals the court

  3. The company looses against the worker (the normal case)

  4. The worker return to his position

  5. The company claims that the relation between company and worker is no more healthy enough for further collaboration

  6. The judge decides how much money must be paid, based on the case and years of service

  7. The worker has to go

It is just a matter of time until the worker is out.

Whoever does not appeal the court in that situation is stupid.

I'd be more afraid if I was in Germany or possibly anywhere in Europe. Assuming OP is correct, this is something you don't want to face again next time, not to mention they're a high cost geo. I'd expect a doubling down in that region.

Strange, if Aicha is planning to close german sites by end of 2017 as one post here suggested, why firing more people here?
