@ICVxoaQ-5gtj, The factual point that the poster made about the 80's oil crisis is that it was a greater economic event, the percentage of jobs lost was higher, and it affected more people across the board. If that event did not affect you at all, but the current ones does, then obviously, the current one seems bigger in your own little mind.

My reference to many years ago was in regard to the 1986 oil bust, which was several times worse than the current one. Texas had made it possible for laid off professional people to have a one time extension of unemployment benefits for an additional 6 month term. I know that was a long time ago, but it was truly a crisis situation at the time, unlike now.

@5nqu, by saying "many years ago", do you mean following the 2008 financial crisis? The federal government under Obama, prolonged UI benefits after the State's 6 month period ran out. I have a brother in Louisiana who was unemployed around that time. Good work was scarce. He got his 6 months UI from the state and was extended another 1 year, paid for with federal money. At this time, the unemployment has improved. No such luck for the unemployed who use up their 6 months from the state. You'll need to get a new job and work enough quarters to build up your base time to file for new benefits.

Many years ago I was laid off and it took 1 1/2 years to find work again at less than half of what I was earning previously. I took various bs part time jobs, like delivering pizza, washing dishes in a restaurant, stocking grocery shelves at night, etc. It really was a low point in my life. I filed my paychecks with TWC and they deducted a percentage of what I made from my weekly unemployment benefit pay, The combined total was the same or slightly more than unemployment alone. By doing this, I was able to stretch out my unemployment benefits to a full year. I continued to make my 3 contacts every week and submit the documentation. I reapplied to continue receiving unemployment benefits at my original rate and was approved. The TWC had all of the documentation that I had continued my search for professional employment (geophysicist) and had resorted to various part time jobs to supplement my income. I could only do this one time. After that, I was SOL if nothing came up for my general field of study and work. Maybe the law has been changed in Texas over all of these years, but it is worth asking about with the TWC. Nothing to lose.

-4qro, Correct. thanks for confirming that. Your base is the last 5 quarters, so , you could effectively try to claim 1 quarter, but that does not work either, because you cannot file the same claim twice. i.e., the company/ layoff event, etc, can only be used to file once. You need to be employed again to get benefits again, it can be short, but it still needs to be a job.

4nqh- yes you can apply again after a year buy if you never worked in that year, you're not going to have any base earnings and you won't get a thing. You have to work to get the base year earnings. You make it sound like people qualify for another six months just like they got. Not true.

You can apply for unemployment benefits once every 12 months. The benefits only last 6 months. So, if you run out, you have to wait 6 months with nothing before you can apply again. Also, the benefits are taxable income, so expect to receive a 1099 form to file with your taxes.

ICVxoaQ-3jeu: yes, sure, get it as soon as you can: why not? My only point is it not worth much to lie about other types of layoff compensation, as indicated in the post below, to get it a few weeks earlier. This dip is bad enough that you will likely use up the whole allotment before the turn around gets moving up anyway, so no big rush.

I just finished my unemployment. The Texas Workforce Commission never asked me for any of my contacts. Others had told me they were never asked either. You only have to supply them with this info if they ask. I simply responded to ads on Indeed.com or sent resumes to friends of mine in our industry. I had told them that their were no jobs. They said to just send out resumes whether companies were hiring or not. I hope this helps.

Having unemployment benefits start as early as possible is precisely what everyone should want, especially if it's your goal to find new work. What crazy logic is "the sooner you start, the sooner it will end"? For crying out loud, if you're saying you don't need the money right away, then here's my solution to you... Save it.

Yes, I just finished my benefits and can confirm what that last poster stated is 100% spot on. The initial delay is of no real consequence unless you are that starving and can't pay bills which is obviously not the case if you got severance pay. The total benefit amount does not change, only when it starts and stops.

3jjl. I am sure what you say is true, but in the end it will matter little as you get only 26 weeks and the sooner you start the faster that will end. I wish you happiness.

If you get severance & paid vacation, etc., in LA, they loosely consider that as more weekly paychecks. They took that into consideration for me in LA., but it did not add the exact number of weeks delay as the pay would indicate. For me it delayed it about a month. I also called them and yanked their chain a little bit to see what was going on. Sometimes, as I understand, that's what it takes. It seemed like it was kind of a flea-bag operation and they make their own rules for everyone as they go.

@3cff and @3teh - When I was laid off in April 2015 in Texas, I applied online with the TWC for unemployment benefits on Day 1 of being off the payroll. Officially terminated. I received my first unemployment check about two weeks later. Mind you, it took them one week just to process my application. However, I didn't return my Serverance Waiver papers for about two weeks after my termination date. I took Chevron another 3.5 weeks to get my severance check delivered to me. In that time frame, I got paid for 4 weeks of unemployment benefits. When asked in my TWC application if I have received a severance from my employer, I answered "No", which was a truthful answer at the moment I applied for benefits. I didn't get a call back, letter, email, or anything. The unemployment payments kept on coming. That was my experience and the facts. I don't expect anything would have changed between how things were done then and how they are done now.

ICVxoaQ-3teh...no ui payments until after severance, same in TX and probably everywhere else. Not a lot different either way unless you have decades of time in.

In Louisiana you can't get unemployment because Chevron supplies the state with info such as what your severance is, whether you are able to receive a pension , etc. Thua you must use up those funds first before the state will co sided guving you unemployment. Makes sense to me.

ICVxoaQ-2tfy. You’re a self-righteous jerk. I am not currently unemployed, but I have been there. In the current downturn it can become very discouraging to be unemployed. The question asked was what to put down as a “job contact” when there is really nothing to apply for, and the correct answer is to just fire off blind resumes until things start to turn around and you can find some real leads. That is really all that is required, and there is nothing unethical about it. At some point one may have to pilot a total career change, but for many that’s a step they wish to avoid (and a valid choice expecting an eventual recovery of the industry, as has happened many times before). Unemployment Insurance is small beans compared with an engineer’s salary, such that it is not something anyone at that skill level goes out of their way to collect except to get past a rough patch. Unemployment insurance is a benefit paid for by his/her previous employer and you’re an axxhole for suggesting otherwise.

@vjm, that's where I got all my fake company references from; online searches and LinkedIn. Cool it down and don't have a stroke. If it was so important to the State to check up on unemployment cheats, they would be more vigilant. Truth be told, the personnel working for the State don't really care. They show up at work to pay out unemployment benefits. The more they hand out, the better job security for them. You should understand that our federal and state government never does anything efficiently. Take advantage of that.

That's pathetic that some people are being encouraged to lie on an official State application which can get a person in serious trouble and lead to garnishing of wages, loss of credit rating, denial of fishing/hunting licenses, etc. It's not that difficult to come up with 3 legit companies to contact a week. It can be done easily online, check linkedin, etc.

Updating your resume, using outplacement services, or just searching for a job online are considered job search activities. It can be something small. I kept a detailed log of all my job search activities. Some weeks things were slow, but I always made sure I did at least three things. Some weeks were busy and I had like 16 activities. I reported the number of activities every two weeks to TWC as required. They never asked for verification or a copy of my logs.

I applied for Texas unemployment benefits on the TWC website. It's much easier than going to a local office. All you need to do is apply for 3 jobs per week. Just making contact alone is sufficient. Several posters already stated their experience. My advise is you should keep good notes. In my experience, I really didn't make any contacts or apply for any more than 4 real jobs in my 6 months on the dole. I was decidedly retired. I had no intention of working a job again, but I took benefits for all 6 months at the maximum amount. I made sure I specified my preference of communication when I initially applied online; email or US Mail only (not by phone). About 4 months into my benefits, I received a letter in the mail asking me to submit 2 weeks worth of job search contacts. They specified the date range they wanted. I provided them 6 completely fake references to job contacts I supposedly made. I indicated that all the job searches were made by mailing my resume and cover letter directly to the HR department of companies that were hiring during the timeframe they requested. End Result: Nothing. I didn't get any questions or follow up from TWC. The remaining 2 months of benefits were paid like clockwork.
