Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

What are your health insurance options after Intel paid COBRA expires?

My COBRA health insurance expires in 3-months and I still have not found a job. And I doubt I will before then. What are your options to get your own insurance after COBRA expires? Through ACA (Obamacare), continue with COBRA, shop around different insurance companies, etc.? How much is if you pay for COBRA on your own?

It comes down to what you need first. Are healthy and don't see yourself going to the dr often? Are you having health issues and expect to go to the dr often? Do you have a family and need health care soon? Choose what better fits you...Obamacare, COBRA up to 18 months, another job with less benefits. It is up to you!

I know what it is like to work a crappy job solely for a health plan. I did it when I was a single mom working freelance and had been denied private insurance due to preexisting conditions. Made me grovel for another company job, even though I liked freelance. Fortunately, with ACA you can now get something on your own, possibly even with a subsidy if you can't afford it, and they can't deny you for preexisting conditions. Or you could pay the COBRA premiums on your own, I think, for another year? You'd have to contact the COBRA carrier to see what the premium will be. It will be surprisingly high, as it will include your usual premium costs plus whatever Intel paid for your coverage (which can be a lot). All kidding aside, you could take a job temporarily at a place that is semi-decent (Starbuck, New Seasons, whatever) to get the benefits, get out of the house, and continue to look for something more suited to you. Be aware however that in many cases, especially if one was not in a highly sought technical specialty, any new job in OR at least is unlikely to pay what Intel paid. Especially if you were there for awhile and got yearly increases. Things are better in the Bay Area, where a couple of ex-Intel folks I know have solid offers in hand already. Back to health care dilemma. My son has been working a low-level job for three years now, solely for the health coverage, while he continues to apply for grad school. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

Look at healthcare.gov first. COBRA coverage is very expensive. If you have SERMA compare premiums private and ACA. The ACA does not allow subsidies if you have SERMA, you may find private policy with better deductibles.
