Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Do you believe that diversity leads to better team results?

This question was asked in a survey and according to HR -- Fewer White and Asian males agreed with the statement. -- So HR geniuses came up with the fix -- Hire more URM managers and reduce number of non-URM managers. -- Nevermind that primarily White and Asian males built this company from nothing. If arms complain of pain, let's cut the arms off. Nevermind that answers were in the context of how diversity is being implemented. If White males were so against diversity than Asian males wouldn't have been there in the first place and wouldn't have agreed with White males. Team results improve by competency, and HR should be looking into only that no competent cadidate is denied the opportunity because of being diverse and nothing else.

Intel should indicate on their job openings: "Candidates must be at least 50% URM. Intel reserves the right to request a blood test from the candidate to truly determine ethnicity, sex, etc. if a job offer is made."

Diversity of coaches for professional (and college) sports teams is probably a better analog for diversity efforts at Intel.

Why are coaches mostly white when players are mostly minority? And why no females?

@ohw -- except the difference is that back in the day of Robinson's baseball league there was systematic racism that existed that blocked neggros from joining MLB league and these barriers were removed to allow meritocracy to take place. In contrast, today, there is no systematic racism. There is (or was until a couple of years ago) meritocracy which allowed Intel to flourish since its inception. Having quotas based on race and gender severely undermines meritocracy. Your post is a "fail" and perhaps the 'racists on this board' are those like you who are making this issue about race rather than meritocracy

Hire and promote based on best talent for the job. Don't feed manager Black, Hispanic, American Native, Women and tell me to fast track and hint with questions like can they do the job, versus let me hire the best Tier 1 graduate, and I'll believe management wants to win.

But sorry the unwritten actions from HR and senior management about hitting numbers that my manager would tell me not to screen great candidate because he was all full on said Indian and Asian says a lot, LOL

Lots of posting re NBA, NFL, MLB here. What people forget that not too long all players were while remember Jack ur Robinson Neggro League we know what's the meaning of make America Great again.

Only when we become more open the barriers cane down, even for a long time it was said blacks could not quaterback. Not smart enough. Same Racist are on this board.

When we go to merit based white males will be 20%, the rest be women, Chinese, ASIANS. WE HAVE QUOTAS FOR WHITE jobs basicly sales and CEO today

By diversity if you mean thinking and resolving problems, yes. If you mean by color, ethnicity, or religion, no. If the latter were the case the NBA would mandate that each team have 50% whites and NHL do the same with 50% blacks. They know if they had a quota system, they would put out a bad product.

@pcg- this country fell for the biggest scammer of all-time 8 years ago, Barack Obama. Both Obama and BK couldn't run a lemonade stand or lead water downhill.

My take is that the evidence of the value of diversity in the workplace is mixed and probably related to a bunch of factors - existing corporate culture, measures of "value," industry, corporate financial success, etc. - that make it hard to generalize.

What's clear is that America is more diverse and companies whose success depends on selling to diverse customers need to have employees who deeply understand these diverse customers and their needs.

What's also clear is that diversity initiatives, like Intel's, can do more harm than good if executed poorly. BK and Rene James rolled out the program in a way that created cynicism and distrust and made it seem like nothing more than a numbers game / social experiment with dubious motivations or goals.

It's as if a manufacturing factory manager rolled out the program, set number targets and said, "make it happen..." (which is, of course, what happened) without getting true bottom up buy-in from key managers or linking it to measures that matter for the company or its employees. Then they fired the lady who came up with the scheme (Rene James) and 12,000 other mostly "successful" employees, which is the perfect stew for more cynicism and distrust.

As an Intel manager who busted my a*s to identify, recruit and hire world-class AND diverse candidates for my team, I got ZERO credit from my managers. They padded their numbers and I got ISP'd (and replaced by a diverse person that I hired). Want a formula for undermining your diversity program: that's it...

So remember: next year, lie on that survey as if you were Bill Clinton. Diversity is going great, URMs are being hired and promoted more than ever, and there is not one single thing Intel could do to make it better.

RIP meritocracy at Intel and welcome Affirmative Action! Grove would be spinning in his grave if he knew. As a Hungarian youth, he had to live through the period of Nazi occupation of Hungary. Now with Intel partnering with Obama and Jesse Jackson to push Affirmative Action, you essentially have the new Fascism which is the merger of corporate and State power. You can bet this will continue under Hillary Clinton where Trump may stop it.

You say NBA, NFL or any sports team talk about racial diversity for the players, nope, all about getting the best talent to WIN. You hear mumble jumble about coaches and such.

I think when you can measure performance in very quantitative numbers it is hard to argue.

Human / team dynamics very hard to produce conclusive evidence that people with lower IQ, or more directly just slower and more stupid can't do as well as their smarter people so it is easy to take the diversity high road.

But I can ask the question a different way why does Intel or any high tech / high performing oriented company generally target Tier 1 schools, have a minimum GPA? Because in the end the statistics say talent matters.

If hitting URM means choosing a diverse candidate that "can do the job" versus a superior Asian or Indian how is that better for the company.. that is political bull crap.

It was clear to me that the senior management did everything to retain women and URM while for the Asians and Indians... well lose one or what so what, but URM or women OMG the messaging was clear...

@bdy - turns out those "studies" were bunk.

Diversity reduces performance because it lowers trust within teams.

Read all about it on this prior thread:

@IHKper3-qbf. Intel is beyond being able to hire the best and the brightest. At least for now. Millennials do not want to go there as a first choice. That might, indirectly, help the company hire more secondary candidates who happen to be URMs. To help meet the quotas.

I read some business psychology studies from way back in the early double aughts that did in fact show that diversity in a team fostered higher performance and better results overall. But at the same time, study after study shows that people hire like for like. We hire people like us. It is human nature. The problem is when you try to force diversity with quotas and preferential treatment based on color, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, whatever...you run into other issues.

The URM policy is explicitly racist.

It's discrimination against qualified people on the basis of race.

The hypocrisy is lost on SJWs and BK in particular.

Nope.

High IQ gets best results.

IQ should be color blind, but BK is a fzcking moron so there's this URM bullsh!t.

Seriously, any company that wants to make money should hire the best and brightest. Anything less and you can expect less. Let's say NASA hires only based on skin color...would you strap yourself inside a rocket to mars? I didn't think so... Any true owner of a company hires the most qualified PERIOD.
