Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Cisco is poor

Don't let the balance sheet fool you. Cisco is poorer than they have ever been. With over 70,000 employees, dwindling margins on Hardware and over 90% of cash trapped overseas, Cisco has few options.

Why do you think they are 'investing' in teaching in India? 3 billion dollars on training and infrastructure. 3 reasons.

  1. Indian labor is cheap

  2. That's where their (tax free) money is

  3. Simple nepotism. What percentage of Cisco Leadership is of Indian descent?

I have tremendous respect for India, the culture and history and the thousands of hard working Indians who work at Cisco. I am not a protectionist. Global is our reality.

I do believe that Cisco, being a US corporation, should invest in American kids, American schools and American communities.

Nepotism is part of the 'new' cisco culture. H1B abuse and just hiring either relatives outright or contracting with a relative's company for outsource is rampant.

The foxes are guarding the henhouse.

I do belive Cisco is a Human Network Company and who you knows plays a part but I also believe the human network is color blind, i.e. your race (Chinese, indian, Israeli or european) does not matter and actually all of those races are also american who dominate the tech industry.

Well you may not tale in country of Origin and Race as important, but trust me many managers do, and are surrounding themselves with "like me's" and in many cases they are relatives. If you work in Cisco in SJ open your eyes the proof is around you.

Please do not try to muddy the waters here by introducing nationality and/or race into the layoffs discussion. I am pretty sure that executives do not care whatsoever about your background, each of us is just a number on the spreadsheet.

RTP won't be shut down. It's a low cost site compared to SJ, and they've been building up marketing groups there. We've been told for a few years now that if will be the center of marketing.

The rumor about RTP shutting down/drastically downsizing has been around for a while. I wonder when Boxborough will be hit in the same way? Lots of empty space in the buildings there. Lots of land that was never used to build the total of 8 buildings (they only ever built 3 in the main BXB campus. Think there are 1300 people in BXB (as opposed to the 5000 that were originally planned).

Expensive locations where they still have backend staff are ripe for the picking. THe only people left "in country" eventually will be sales people. So all the analysts and finance managers and layers of useless directors/other pointless management will be gone. This is certain.

Locations I'm thinking of:

  • Bedfont Lakes ( anyone other than sales, im amazed they havent been outsourced yet, tick tock)

  • Dublin . Theres a whole finance department there that is being slowly replaced in Poland.

  • Berlin Random sales support staff.

  • SJ - If you are lower than manager level, doing a non sales role, watch out

RTP - is going to be shut down or drastically downsized, last i heard.

I left Cisco in 2014 of my own free will. Best decision i ever made.
