I think I am about to be RA'd - Cannot specify my details (loc/div/dpt), however I've been here under 2 years. How do they do layoffs here - mechanically. Call? Conf Call? HR only? etc. Please let me know.

Obviously your well, under 30 if your making comments of hosed bro if your over 50. Several of our colleagues here in Georgia working on the IBM state contract got lied to and duped and were mostly over or close to 50 all annexed in 10 years ago All of us recovered and are far better off outside the iron curtain laying off the blue koolaide and working fast paced with less IBM big blue road blocks and stop work meetings - paving the way in other companies leaving big blue and Ibm in the dust ..... So.....Know what you say and learn a quick lesson here - and when you climb up our latter if you so survive your layoff, We will surely give you a hand out and a swift pull up to where we are breathing fresh air and watching sunrises along with new paychecks coming in ..... Enjoy your pale grey cube And coffee drinking roaming manager looking over your shoulder ---Cheers and Yippee-ki-yay, MF ----
Hello all - I am the OP - This is great - thanks for the input and I do feel a bit better now that I know what's ahead of me
When I got RA my manager called me the day RA's were happening at 8 AM and just told me. No meeting invite or prior warning .
My manager and I had reoccurring monthly checkpoints for 1 year +. When I received an "info update" for the initial meeting record with abbreviation F2F that's when I knew the writing was on the wall.
In addition, months prior to my exit meeting, I knew my job (and peers in GTS SO) was doomed when more and more PMs from out of eastern canada (tax incentives and lower paid salaries) were popping up in our projects alongside our fellow colleagues from India campuses.. (Being assigned non complex project assignments) I knew in my gut the end was near, not if but when. And it all came to fruition prior to the announcement of 1st quarter results.
I wouldnt bother applying internally as you are considered a "cost take out" on an excel template. The only way you can be approved for a position is if the hiring manager axes one of hi/her own.. Balance the books again.. I wouldnt waste time and energy... If the severence is lackluster (1 month salary) I would recommend not zombying" it out for 90 days (they give you this allotted time so you can find a job outside of IbM and not pay out your severance and will use this notice amount as a compliment to the measly seperation payment)..
Definitely start looking outside within your notice period as its easier to get a job while still employed than not at all..
Good luck to you!
There is life outside IbM and it is great!
Mine was first indicated by a meeting invite in Lotus Notes - subject was "personal." Then my manager called me and read the script, followed by the email of the script. In GBS at least it is 90 days until off payroll, with one month severance pay. My last day is in two weeks. Last week I was moved in Blue Pages from my SAM to a "transition manager" who sent me a template to fill out with info about how many vacation days had I taken, what teamrooms did I own, did I owe IBM money, and so on. He said he would soon send me the final form for me to sign. That's been my experience so far.
Depends on your geography, e.g., in UK there are strict laws and it’s hard to lay off people. Here in the States you’ll get a meeting invite, your mgr will be in the room – there will be legal folks inside too. And HR. They will get busy quick, there is not touchy-feely stuff going on there – they get to the point quickly. You’ll be offered 30 days to find a replacement position which will never happen, 9 years here never heard about anybody who did it, I know a dozen folks who got axed.
You will leave in 30 days, they will cut you a check for 30 more days. Return the assets on your way out. There is a ton of posts on severance here, long story short, cobra and 30 days, that’s kind of it. They could give a F about you and your career or personal situation, you are literally just a number, you know this as I am sure nobody cared about you before you are laid off too. IBM is as soulless as they get… Update your social ntwk profiles, call people, go to places, hustle, something will come up. If you are over 50, you are hosed bro, you’ll never recover – I hope you saved some money…
