Looks like most of the PC intustry is moving to a 2-year update cycle. The Silicon improvements are negligible, people upgrade every 5-6 years, why waste design effort on sliw moving PCs when the real war is in Smartphones, VR, driverless cars, etc
Apple will relegate Mac to niche status and proliferate iOS devices as the standard "PC"
Wintel lost a long time ago. OSX will also become a relic.
Apple will upgrade when Kaby lake is released with 3dx point memory; or else be left in the dust.
The design works, everything we need it to do it still does well, why change what works.
I think the average Joe/Jane also looks at their laptop and desktop the same as intel senior managers do when they decide should I update my PC or not. I can spend thousands, or a few hundred, or still use the same machine I have and spend nothing.
With a billion machines installed and every family needing fewer as they all got smartphones that they upgrade every two years and do far more.. figure total PC sails will drop to about 200-225 Million and on average be used 5-6 years....
DO the math, you need maybe two 14nm factories ( big ones ) or one 10nm factory ( of course assuming you have yield ) to produce that volume. Instead intel has three little factories to capture tax savings and government charity... again BK'd
