Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Zero Allegiance

When I joined Cisco in 2000, it was one of my most proudest moments. I used to pinch myself everyday for the first week. Soon after, we experienced a downturn in the market and Cisco prepared for a big layoff. It was inevitable and the entire management chain were very saddened. However, post layoff many people started bailing ship. They smelled something the rest of us coudn't. Some us decided to stay and support Cisco through its tough times. What was the end result.... When time came to Axe some people they specifically targeted those long timers, 1) who didnt get their fare share of salary adjustments, 2) who didnt get any stock options replacements for all of the underswater ones, 3) who eventually didnt get any stock options at all, 4) who werent allowed to get training to keep up with their skillsets, 4) who had to make changes in their jobs enable to work virtually.

It gets better.... when they axe these people, they slap on a 6 month cooling period so that directly or indirectly will not allow past employees to take on assignments back at Cisco.

Its a horrible company, with horrible management and horrible work environments.

They now have the sneakiest ways to plan layoffs. The last one was a manager rotation program that makes it easier for the new managers to get rid of people they dont really know.

@Dirk Pretty much. Regardless of technical merit or work ethic, you can't compete with cultural mafias. Just look to land somewhere else where the ratio is <60%, leave when it passes that if you haven't been canned already

Bringing in a bunch of clueless Chinese and Indians with zero creativity just plagiarizing off each other and fronting all smiles while gossiping in native languages killed the valley.

the Rio Olympics article talked about in this site even had to do a retraction b/c they originally listed us as the Sysco food company. Cisco may have been known as a great company years ago, but I guess not today. When even the press doesn't know who you are, that's saying something. Or did they do what Cisco does and hire newbies to do a grown ups work?

16 yr Veteren nailed it with a great post. Many same execs over those rough years were taken care of. For the IC's, your stock melted away.

And yes Chuck, that what pisses off a lot of folks who have been here 16 years felt the worst of it. I was told when I was hired - "you're gonna be a millionaire, stock is splitting left and right. " Here's 5000 shares @ $67 a share and subsequent options which amounted to nothing.

You see Chuck, many of your officers were taken care of, but what about the rest of us?

Yeah I hope you think about that the next time you say "The People Deal" you think about the 1000 of employees that will never see 1% of the benefits you do.

Take care of the folks you made promises to before your People Deal

Truth be told, I could work at many different companies, large and small. Not hubris just rational determination based on my skills/experience/education and the landscape. I chose Cisco 10 years ago because it offered great pay, excellent benefits and a bit of cachet to go along with it. For the first 3-4 years I was proud to say I worked for Cisco, for the next 3-4 I was ambivalent about it, for the last 3 years I'm almost ashamed. The annual layoffs are embarrassing and demoralizing.

Stead of the "oh, Sysco, the food company" we get "oh, Cisco, didn't they just lay off a ton of people"

I get it.

The move to software and services is inevitable. The problem will be getting there. You can't leap a 20 foot chasm by taking 2 10 foot jumps.

Cisco seems to build up a ton of fat over the year then purges it in August like a bulimic.

The poor leadership is catching up to them
