But that is no cause for cheer for the laidoff oil industry employees with this dismal state of affairs still lingering in oil industry. If Hillary is going to get elected, which is looking more and more like a certainty these days what with Trump squandering his chances day after day, she is going to make things much worse for this industry. Remember she wants to finish the job Obama started, and finish she will.

@IJ9ZYCj-6nkd - Yes,... I agree. I grew, shall we say,.... a little leery of HES, during my assignment to one of several Chevron field sites. Indeed, these guys became the Rock Stars of the organization! They went here and there, demonstrating their skills, upholding the pride of the plant, lots of lavish cook-outs, lunches, etc.,... it was all good. But, for me, I noticed a few "blemishes", some "imperfections", and not because I WANTED to see the image of these heroes tarnished in any way,... these were things I could not HELP but to notice. See,... I used to sit in my car, out in the parking lot, at lunch, and listen to Rush Limbaugh. I'd guess that lot had several hundred vehicles in it, and it was pretty "tight", not much room for error. The posted speed limit was 10mph, as I recall, and every day,... EVERY day, I'd see some clown in red FRC's (one of our local heroes) come blitzing through the parking lot in their one-ton at DOUBLE the speed limit. Not being fond of hypocrisy, I brought up the matter of my observations in the next safety meeting (the Plant Manager was present). To say that my remarks were met with disdain, would be an understatement. To my knowledge, nothing was ever said, to the offending "heroes", speed limits were not altered, no one was counseled, and the incidents (which I continued to observe) went on, unabated. I think that says volumes about Chevron's "culture of safety".

Chevron was staffing up for the "great crew change". Problem is with the dip there has been little mentoring. I suspect the problem will not be a long hiring freeze, but rather when things rebound all the experienced folks will be on the links with no interest in returning....and all the mistakes of the past will have to be repeated before the new crew learns what they are doing.

@7txe, Good observation on what future consequences a hiring freeze would bring us. I think many O&G companies over hired during the bountiful years, never considering this industry is cyclical. Once we level off the lows and start to see better times ahead, we need to start replacing old blood for new and continue with a plan of balancing natural attrition with a 5% pruning of the workforce every 2 years.

This may end up like the eighties when oil companies went through job cuts followed by no hiring for quite some time. Another age gap situation taking shape. Yes the sad part is the rest of the economy is apparently doing so well, but the oil sector is shrinking steadily.

Forced quotas for BBS participation is a sign that the system has failed. Most cards are made up anyway but management uses the findings to implement more rules and procedures. We are wasting time fixing problems that don't exist.

Another gripe is that no one is allowed to dare challenge the overreaching influence of HES. So many times when an incident occurs a new system is put in place to eliminate future occurrences. Often times if the existing system had been followed to begin with nothing would have happened. Instead of holding people accountable now we have two worthless systems in place.

A double blind look back study after the paper cut remediation celebration indicated there had in fact been just as many paper cut as before the danger was recognized, it was just that the paper cut incident review process had become so onerous that everyone had stopped reporting them when they occurred.

Yes. Tabulated 25000 near miss paper cuts and only one gas leak issue that might blow up rig. Concluded that paper cuts were clearly the recognized critical issue. Formed a paper cut awareness commitee, asked everyone to stand down to give input as to their feelings about paper cuts, hired a new staff of paper handling specialists to be floor oversight reviewers, and initiated an all staff paper danger awareness training program. The rig explored, obviously, which was very sad, but we are delighted to celebrate 1 million man hours of work without a paper cut.

Unfortunately Chevron HES has been focusing on minutia things like this instead of the important safety issues. They have created way too many BS low value processes that the real workers are forced to implement. This has caused poor morale and loss of productivity with no improvements in safety to speak of.

I am an administrative assistant, It used to be that I was to report at least 4 safety observations per months (recent year cut down to two). I sit in my cubicle all day long and all I can think of is ergonomic and paper cut. Times after times our office group only focus on "dont walk around with an open paper cup of coffee". We know it is stupid for the corporate culture to repeat this so many times in a year.

After BP's Macondo incident, Chevron put a much greater focus on process safety. That's good in theory, but the Company's technical capabilities have declined to the point that it's not clear that people really understand what is going on in increasingly complex facilities such as Escravos GTL or TCO. Do agree that CVX was WAY too focused on personal safety to the point it was pissing me off, wasting so much time on trivial things.

Actually look backs on the Horizon disaster suggeste they where focused on all those little safety issues (RSI, hard hat complicate, etc), they just took a short cut on a very big safety check to save time/money. At Chevron we are the masters of small safety "moments", but it's an open question if our focus on the small issues really leads to protection against disasters. The alternative would be if you want to avoid big problems stay focused on the heavy hitters.

-5fir, Yes, agree for the most part and hope that you are right. However.... You guys are comparing CVX's performance & outlook to the top 3 or 5 players. XOM, Shell, BP, etc. Compared to the rest of the field, CVX is still among the top, particularly according to market analyses, which carries a lot of weight. In your eyes, you think that CVX s---s in many ways because you are in the inside looking out, and you can see first hand all of the dirty details of the lack of competence, inadequacies, etc, etc, But from outside the box, among your competitors as a whole, Chevron is still well respected. And believe it or not, a lot of it has to do with the things that they do that you hate regarding personnel assignments, "green energy", crazy safety & environmental requirements, etc.

I agree with -5gia. In many ways the oil industry is a victim of its own success. The rapid increase in production of shale oil and gas in the U.S. put a supply glut on the market, driving prices down. OPEC has been unable to agree on production quotas to keep prices high, in an effort to fund their domestic programs and drive U.S. shale producers out of business. It's supply and demand, market economics. The level of analysis by Chevron employees could be quite a bit more thoughtful into what caused the current situation and what will cause it to improve. Chevron's poor operations reliability record and sloppy project execution is certainly not the fault of the government.

Retired people post on these threads? A primarily layoffs forum? I doubt it seriously. Maybe about 2%. I'm fairly sure that they have much better things than posting with the miserable, anti-corporate and disgruntled workers on these threads. Maybe on the few retirement-related threads like pensions, etc. But except for those threads, which are very few, it's pretty much just us girls. I think some people are trying to justify their unpopular opinions, so they just say "oh you old fart with old dried up opinions, blah blah". Old farts ain't fartin' around here, buddy. They have much better things to do, I can assure you.

I volunteer frequently at a local food bank and I was curious about how many liberals vs conservatives were among the volunteers. I often read these threads and many comment on different sites where liberals claim to be so giving and promote volunteering and boast about that often online. I was just interested in seeing how many liberals I work with at the food bank, after all, the way they boast online anonymously, it should be 99% liberals, right? It really doesn't matter, I am a moderate, or at least I consider myself that and I will continue volunteering until I die, it's just what I do. It's a tough question to ask, I sort of beat around the bush, you know. Well, to my surprise, I have not identified ONE liberal democrat at all. Not one. And we have literally hundreds of volunteers including all of our locations Most are Catholic and or super-Christian types, unlike me. And a lot of pro-lifers , pro-giving, you know the types. But no liberals to be found. Yet they all claim to be so compassionate online. I think that the online liberals and millennial chat room room types are all about the talk. All talk and no do. That's just what we need. A new generation of talk the talk millennial liberals who know just how charitable that everyone ELSE should be, as they preach from the PC's that mommie paid for, or enabled them to have by paying their way for everything.
