Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Canada demographics

Canada demographics

During the Canada town hall the comment was made about maintaining demographics and that we don't want to be left with a lumpy organization. The 2nd part to that was on the male/female split and not being biased on the basis of gender. HR has some sort of tools to assist with this which I'm guessing is nothing more than a spreadsheet listing of employees that includes their age and sex.

I can understand not wanting to target specific age-groups that would leave knowledge gaps in the organization but why even consider gender as part of this round of layoffs? During the next couple of years of running lean we'll need the best and brightest so shouldn't merit alone be the deciding factor?

Does anyone know roughly what the current gender split is in Calgary?

Has any other BU heard something similar?

If Canada wants to implement affirmative action they should start with their senior leadership team. They can start to talk about a 50% split at the lower levels once there is a 50% split at the top.

Giving 3 to 1 odds that more males will be released than females!

No it means if the general population is 50/50 then there needs to be 50/50 in the workforce not layoffs

So does that mean that if the male:female split is 70:30 that the layoff numbers will also have a 70:30 split?

And yes, of course they track these stats in L48/Houston as well

It's discrimination law. If a pattern emerges whether it's age or gender, the company can be sued. That's why.

Newsflash to the person who posted the Mat Leave comment. Women going on mat leave DO NOT get their full salary while on leave. COP pays them nothing for the time they are gone. We get EI from the government which is only $1900 a month. Pretty sure that amount is what most people at COP make weekly and those would be supporting roles too, not your Engineers. Think Finance, SCM, etc. Do your homework before you start shooting your mouth off.

Without any sort of gender discrimination; Canada is probably the only country in the world that allows workers to work for a year the take ONE YEAR OFF (Mat Leave), come back for six month of work to go again for ON YEAR OFF whereby both OFF years are with full salary.

Simple math, FEMALES are getting twice the salary for the periods they work - Isn't that a clear discrimination to MALES who support families?

If I were in Conoco Canada management team, I'd target such a huge inefficiency within the layoffs and furthermore; I'd never hire any female employee.

Does this mean that ECDs will be hit again?

We did not hear anything of this sort in L48 / Houston. Seems extremely odd...but what doesn't with this company nowadays?
