Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

HR spends hundreds of thousands to figure out it s---s

Corp HR has retained consulting giant Deloitte to tell it what we have known for decades: HR at Chevron is good at only one thing - wasting the money we make.

Project Next HR just sent a survey - easily hacked since HR constantly prints and leaves confidential docs at the group printer - that asks how their staff spend their time. Funny that brown nosing, preserving antiquated technology, and finding new ways to waste money aren't among the options for employees to choose. Oh wait, brown nosing is there: "consulting with leadership."

So maybe HR will get a little haircut like the rest of CVX. Perfect timing too as they just moved hundreds of their people to Houston.

Project Next HR - NEXT!!! done with the current batch.

So true about HES, 4xxt. Many do not have the certifications or technical education to be directing the company in matters of Health, Environmental or Safety. That department was allowed to get overblown with the wrong people over the last 10 or 15 years. Decimate them now while the axe is swinging.

HES rivals HR in useless staff. On the upstream side I can say 3/4 of the process advisors have neither the experience or education to be in that position. Many have never seen a rig.

Have to agree. HR is useless and they should be the first to go.

The only time our HR BP rep shows his face is right before a round of layoffs. If you see that dude walking around it's time to get worried.

@INLmb6s-1yse, the SAP software is OK, it's the HR staff that is ineffective. Why does Chevron need so many HR reps (and so many HR managers) when they have a self-service software that does most of the HR work? What do all those HR people do other than meet with one another? They certainly do not contribute to the bottom line. Chevron needs to take a look at all of the overstaffed groups that use and manage those pricy software packages. The Procurement group is another group that seems fat but unhelpful in general.

I remember 20 years ago when HR had offices for their organization reps on the same floors as their client business unit. They had an open door policy where employees could just pop their heads in through the door and ask a question. These were times when the HR reps were your friend and would be greeted by many as such. Today, the HR office is located on a floor away from the employees they supposedly represent. You hardly see them walking nearby or for long enough to even say hello. They dart in and out of conference room meetings or only are seen talking with management. If you arrive unexpected in their offices, they look somewhat astonished or bothered, like if you're there to lodge a complaint or or dig for information that's none of your business. That's my personal experience on how much HR has changed in 20 years.

HR had been slowly deteriorating over the past 12-15 years. Particularly the past 5-7 the speed of deterioration has increased. Lots of low hanging fruit due to all the incompetence. Someone could easily have a field day cutting this group.

Deloitte makes most of its money by the number of headcount they can cut from an organization. HR is swollen with PC, low skilled HR business partners with management PSGs. Virtually all HR functions are automated through SAP-style employee self service with management check the box verification. Deloitte has an automated revenue calculating engine on its dashboard that spins like a stop watch when the RIF hits. It's Karma empowered by IT. The HR brown nose brigade will face the game of musical chairs they helped organize the past two years. Deloitte is mapping redundancies and calculating savings in the tens of millions. And CVX stockholders will read a professional report with pivot tables. This cut will be greeted with cheers from current and past employees!

I'm not even going to justify the comments regarding gender and productivity by other posters with a rebuttal.

However on the main topic...two things must be considered:

1) HR exists for the benefit of the company, not the employee. Get over that one!

2) Actual HR personnel are bound by the systems and procedures that have been created for them to use. (Example: If SAP is ineffective, then you can't blame the HR person using it. If you don't like policy, it's not the individual administering fault).

Nobody likes HR in these tough times, because THEY are the face of the system that is putting the axe to folks. I got laid off... but considering the numbers of folks in the same boat, the folks I had to deal with did a pretty good job of administering the hand that was dealt. I even felt empathy from some!

If something needs to be done with an HR reorganization, JW (maybe through the independent eyes of Deloitte) should start with looking at the CVX policies and procedures.

And look on the bright side, CNL (Nigeria) has 1 HR person for every 3 employees to administer all the BS perks (housing allowance, cars and fuel, generators, etc...etc.) that come with Pengassen and Nupeng unions. Consider the stateside waste of supposedly "hundreds of thousand in USD" a bargain....LOL.

Hey ... Isn't the HR General Manager a male???? There have been plenty of ineffective HR male managers. The problem is that they are so bogged down in their antiquated processes that they don't do any real work. Plus, that SAP software runs their piece of the business, not them. Since they use SAP, Upper Management should get rid of all of those HR slackers. Now that would be a big savings that makes sense.

@INLmb6s-1cij, it's mostly because the HR function itself is useless and so they know putting women there means they aren't screwing up other departments. At least that's why they initially flocked there. Now it's just for the exceptionally dumb broads who majored in communication or women's studies. Gotta love affirmative action.

Hey bgg, why is HR staffed almost always by women? Is it because women are mostly submissive or because they are mostly PMS biaches?

All HR departments are useless. That's why they're staffed with women.

Yes that is so true, -ucc. Every time someone posts about a group having cuts all the other douche-bag adolescents chime in and say that "we don't need them anyway , they're all useless" Like clockwork and also pathetic.
