Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Non-managerial G11+ targeted in Engineering.

I'm hearing that this time it's going to be focused on higher grades only. What I heard is that whole concept of senior technical leadership (PEs and Fellows) is revamped, and leadership roles are now being closer tied to respective BUs (and realized through lower grades).

For TL and TL2 roles, I'm hearing that desired structure no more then 3 TLs or 2 TLs and one TL2 per director.

Also heard, that this time some may be offered demotion instead of just pink slip.

There IS a bias against older Grade 11 engineers... This cannot be denied, I've been here for 20 years. I've tried everything to update my skills, Cisco learning, UC extension, online courses, but still get shut out to work on new projects. I am just waiting for a package now

This is crap - I don't believe it. There are a couple of BU's where a lot of technical creep happened - where everybody in a unit is a PR, DE or Director. This is not the case in the standard (i.e. the ones that make all the money) BU's and CERTAINLY not true for technical roles. I've been promised PE this Sept, and I've been waiting for almost 8 years. The promotion step in this part of the organization is HARD, most of the PE and DE in our org are real contributors - but they got it years ago. Very few get made these days. Directors on the other hand? Now that's still a corrupt process.

To many fake managing directors to- especially in advanced services BD. What is BD for? nobody would know if services BD leave the services. Customers would not know. Partner not know.

There are too many directors that should not be directors at Cisco now. Massive title creep against what that meant 15 years ago.

@ emu, Check in the Mobility. A Director reports to a Director who reports to another Director reports to a VP. And this bottom director has multiple managers under him with 10s of Tech Leads and Engineers reporting to each of those managers. I have never seen such strange hierarchy in my entire professional life.

What would happen to those VP's who report to SVP who reports to another SVP who reports to yet another SVP? I'm not kidding. This is what my reporting chain looks right now: 4 VP/SVP in a report chain of only 8 levels.

The minute someone is demoted they immediately start looking for a new job. Cisco knows this so I doubt they'll offer demotions.

It's anybody's guess for now... Not sure back grading will help.

Most of the times.. cut positions and eventually they get filled up with Acquisitions in a year.

Rinse repeat the procedure every year.

Like harvesting crops..

Provide demotion opportunity to overpriced FTE and back-fill those positions currently filled by contractors. BOOM....mind, blown.

Yes, back grading directors and other higher grades is supposed to happen.
