Well, they did have pretty tough competition on x86 from AMD back in the 90s/early 00s, Intel finally prevailed after adopting some of the AMD innovations such as 64bit extensions, dual core, etc. It was a pretty close call though, considering AMD is a 10x smaller company.
SO, even in x86 Intel is not THAT good ...
The major asset that Intel had was process technology leadership, and that is about to go away once TSMC/Samsung are first to reach 10nm/7nm nodes.
You can't buy leadership and Nvidia is so far ahead I doubt intel can catch up.
1) graphcis intel has failed and failed again here... how is AI going to be different
2) Mobile how many billions has intel spent and how many generations of design and technology and they failed...
Between 1 and 2 unless they overhaul management and approach I don't expect anything different. Look at Itanium and Larabee as alternative examples of internally nurtured and failed, wasn't for lack of money/people or advance silicon.
