Going after senior level folks

In my org, top grade levels were hit. I know of 2 GL 12s, 1 GL 11 and a Director. Lots of knowledge and experience slashed.

My org has had goals for a while to lower the grade profile (and age/cost profile) by hiring grade 8-10. We now look to replace one grade 12 who's leaving with 2 x grade 8 or so. I know you all think that G11-13 people are old, inflexible, useless and technically backward. That can be true, but let me tell you - you can give a G11 or G12 something to do, and it gets done (well, in most cases). The amount of time you have to spent 'mentoring' lower grades in order to get a result almost makes it easier to do it yourself. We're constantly being asked to lower our grade profile, but nobody is happy with the outcome. In fact, more work is pushed onto the G11-12 because the managers just want to get stuff done, and haven't the time to get the same result with more junior staff. I'm an older 55+ worker and just been made G12 (don't ask why it took that long for me to get there) and I'm regularly getting stuff reassigned to me from lower grade staff - because the managers just cannot get the result they want. We're not all useless.

The data I saw for my org screamed age discrimination. They know that people will not sue, because they do not want to lose their severance. It is too risky to take a the chance. There are targets to lower the average employee age. So excellent employees get axed simply for their age.

Enough childish comments. Older engineers have experience and are owed expect as they are the ones that have mentored you young millinials. They are expensive not due to salary but due to insurance- older and have families. You millinials will be in that position shortly so why throw stones and not support fair policies for current older engineers so you won't get same treatment. And India bashing is just as ridiculous. The company hires h1 visa folks simply because they work cheaper.

Older worker cannot keep up because time move to fast

typical indian/millennial thinking.

Im almost sixty, doing my fourth startup.

and after six months, manager is a little worried they did not offer me more but Im getting an awesome deal compared to large corps I goofed with for the past ten years, including cisco.

My boss flat out told me that when GIS made the list they realized that there were too many older people on it.. so they took "some", (from the look of it a handful), old people off the list and replaced them with young people. By the way.. i was the oldest person on my team.

When all upper management trumpets the notion that "early career" it's age discrimination for folks over 40.

Older worker cannot keep up because time move to fast for project and engineering deadlines. The older engineer in San Jose only want to surf internet and complains about h1b. It time they leave so rest of us can get rsu and raise.

I am 50+ and spent years at CSCO before leaving a few years ago. No way on those pct. Legal wouldn't allow it because it would be too easy from an age discrimination POV.

But I am sure that they are going right to the legal edge to get rid of older people.

In US, most engineers' working time for cisco are 10 years. When i visit HQ in SJ, it's old smell. those guys don't know new technology, new marketing, new generation guys and they are expensive. If I'm chuck, I will do same things. cost and energy are import for new future.

My team, a 58 GL 12 white guy, nice guy, always helped the new grad H1 visa hires, great attitude ... He said he would prefer to keep working but is in decent shape financially. He told us he started his career in aerospace and in the late 80's those companies started downsizing and offered nice packages for people his age to retire ... He feels Cisco just threw him out the door, package is cheap
