Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Is Cisco that bad? Or is it just relative to treatment of other Mature Tech companies?

I always envied all those who had the privilege to work in Tech Sector.

The office politics may be bad, but most of you live in Silicon Valley. So what differs a Cisco from a mature Tech Company?

Cisco is still OK albeit in decline but I've seen a lot worse. Remember as long as you work for any company you are a salary slave. Glory days are gone and that's how the industry has shifted so we all better get used to more of the same. good luck folks!

I think there are a lot og (quite rightly) grumpy employees around at the moment. That said I don't think Cisco is any better or any worse than any other large company. Generally at any company people slag off management until they become one! I even think teh whole "politics" is over stated. Sure you get some s--- ups but generally they are pretty good.

I've worked for many large companies and what Cisco lacks in good processes / managers it makes up for in good benefits.

One thing I have found at Cisco is the huge number of Ops Reviews and meetings generally. Managers are told by their staff to communicate. SO they have meetings and then staff (like me) complain about the volume of meetings...

So no, Cisco isn't any different to other companies. Just don't assume its a job for life...and that goes for all companies, tech or otherwise.

@0xf: agreed, but it is not about H1-B alone , may of the managers who joined in 2000 are citizen now. They are experts in politics and LIE. they have no morals and are greedy.

Yes, it is indeed that bad, rife with politics, nepotism and other dirty games that destroy lives for the gain of others. Many are living it right now. I don't mind so much being laid off but not under the present circumstances of many. Gone are the times we can get things done together. I don't see any change in sight. Think twice and proceed with caution if you decide to stay with or join Cisco.

I've worked or consulted at about twenty companies.

Cisco ranks pretty low for me now. I was excited to do a consulting gig there but was quite disappointed, lots of indians and their games, politics, monumentally aimless and mismanaged projects. But by that time, I'd already seen similar situations in several other companies (Aetna, HP, T-Mobile, etc) so I wasn't real surprised

It's terrible. In terms of systems, processes and level of talent, Cisco is extremely immature. But in terms of organizational life cycle, it's an organization in decline.

Cisco used to be the cool place to work at now it's lost it's coolness overnight so the faithful are in shock still wondering what happened and where did it all go. It's actually a boring place to work with all the Indian and Asian nerds. The 80s and 90s nerds were more of the hippie save the world and give back type but the H1 nerds are about consuming and not giving back just take it all greedy culture. Reminds me of the after effect when the US introduced the Asian carp fish a total mess.
