Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Heard of new push for hands-on managers

Who can code & troubleshoot in C, C++, Java,Python etc examine core files crash dumps instead of being an email only manager.

@3kvs: WNBU is a good example of the "leader" setting an example . The testers were as good as the Director. .. but Chuck is going to get rid of her too.

Very happy that all "politician- Dir" will be cleaned out of cisco.

hands on + manager is a kind of oxymoron in the csco way. csco mgrs are good at bug scrubs, ppts, xls, mpp, playing politics, wandering around meetings all day, logging in on jabber at night and watching a movie but showing "commitment" and "presence", rewarding cronies and doing a great job on hiring the worst candidates..oh I forgot - soaking up fun low pressure trips for training/industry annual jamborees/hiring.

HA! You hit the nail on the head! WNBU was notorious for this kind of thing. I always wondered how so many of the tech leads kept their jobs. They never produced anything other than PPT presentations. I guess they belonged to the right (Indian) tribe.

Well, the technical track is so difficult to get promoted, and there are quotas on top grades. No such limits on management roles.

The norm now or atleast my management like only the "Yes Sir" people and favour them. But in the same company I have seen some real good managers . Being straight forward is never appreciated. But hey I am glad will be out of that mess. Life moves on and dosent stop here . If I have to flip burgers to earn my bread going forward will do so , but not end up kissing my Boss A-- so stay in high tech .

So you mean to tell me that Cisco management werent Engineers/ Computer Scientist before being managment?

Problem spotted. The incentive is to move to managment. Now once management gets a few outsiders into the group, out of insecurity they find other non technological people into that group. And then always find an excuse like grads from technical universities lack the people or management skills.

I have seen the problem happen were community college grads somehow find themselves in management and gut the company of Engineers.

This is also bad because it removes the incentive to get promoted.

The engineering managers in Cisco are not supposed to know how to code and troubleshoot, which should be done by the engineers. Our roles are more like Brahmins. We are the thinkers, and our biggest contribution to Cisco shareholders is to manage engineers who are just a bunch of lazy slackers.

will be a good move if that happens.

"pythom for beginners" will be a nice way to start, managers.

If a worker has the time and ability to troubleshoot where is the need for the manager to do that?

None of the managers in the group (routers) can do any of the above. These are engineering managers but they have lost all their technical skills (probably never had one before). It includes the 1st and 2nd lines. Amazingly, in some groups not only the managers but also some engineers can't do technical works. They brought their caste system into the BU (yes, this is in America). Folks in that "elite" class don't need to do anything but talking and PowerPoint presentations. This is used to be seen as the roles of VP and Directors. Now it has come down to the engineers all because of nepotism and favorism.
