Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

And my 2c

I left Q for another larger comp this year. Based on my experiences, Id say that if u are an early career professional, Q is a good place to be- lots of online learning and good name on resume. If u r mid career - unless u are really well comped ( unlikely) or u have an aspiring manager - u are going to meander about without any destination or growth. I would not spend more than 2 years unless you are due a promotion.

If you are above 50 and can snag a senior staff or principal/director position, u have likely a good career path to a safe retirement :-)

If you are in Bay Area, you should look around- since (as i found) Q has a reputation with no real customer products except expensive chips and seem to have expertise only in rf/cellular. No one likes the licensing model. Rest is meh. Other more balanced companies can lead to to faster growth path.

QC is an excellent company no matter your job title. Where is your loyalty.

At some point Q will decide to remove RTP, SCL, etc.. Due to consolidation.

RTP mgmt runs like mafia. If you joined with original group from IBM, you are made and cannot be touched. Everyone else is nobody and expendable. New director like old director, tyrant and bully.

SCL is the same. Bunch of disparate groups doing many things. CRD gets proj reassigned all the time

If you're at QC in the bay area - you're a loser that can't get a job in better companies. Management in SJ suks, and there are many better companies to be with - unless you like (or can only be hired at) lesser companies. Even the start-ups are a much-lesser chance.

I left Q last year before the layoffs. I would recommend even early career professionals to look around and weigh their options. These days there are a lot of opportunities for them as well.

Q is a good place if you need a green card too... however, once you've got it, don't hesitate to leave. Better comp available elsewhere.
