Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Fulsim will begin massive layoff after Anita dumped VPG and moved on?

Fulsim / VPG software (the team that is making Intel GPU) shows minimal layoffs in the past weeks. However rumor says massive layoff or VSP to ISO convention will begin after Anita finished the internal transfer. Is this true?

After working with VPG software for six years I suddenly realized my skill set as well as my mindset are no longer employable. Deeply worried with wife and kids to raise and house to pay.

So, who's gonna do Gen graphics SD now? Are they moving to 3rd party IP from Imagination graphics?

Not sure what you thought, @eti, but I was wondering if Fulsim was an extremely butched up way of spelling Folsom. lol Apparently not. :)

Agree about whether there is a need for a functional simulator team that's almost as large as the design team.

There's always VSIM

Fulsim is the functional simulator written in C++. The team implements and models HW where RTL design models in verilog. Both should match so Fulsim acts as gold data for RTL. Being part of Fulsim team means your skills are very Intel specific and you can only sell yourself as a C++ programmer/simulation. You guys are not even skilled in C++ since you don't extensively write OOP and you don't write code from scratch. A recent computer science graduate might do just better if they can think HW.

I understand your concern and I agree. Over the years you won't build any skills and you will be far from employable.

Always remember, if an RCG can do your job then you're of no special value.

One thing I learned about working at Intel, especially if more than a couple of years, is that your skills become too narrowly focused on Intel-specific needs. You lose your generalism, diversity and range. And, ironically, because you are a very specific cog in a vast and unique machine, you lose your versatility and creativity. I take ownership for having let this happen to me. I am paying for it now in my job search. On the plus side, the Intel model lets some people become breathtakingly skilled in their niche... but what happens when that niche goes away or we have to reduce head count? I also learned that just doing a job well is not enough. I wasn't very good at the whole focal thing. My team was hugely hit by 2015-16 ERPs/ISPs/VSPs to where they are down from a hundred people to now maybe 12. They all do a very specific thing that may or may not translate to the outside world. I went to a post-Intel workshop and found out my Intel colleagues (me included) have a hard time writing a resume that isn't Intel gibberish and incredibly narrow. Plus, one of the tips they tell you in the resume class is "don't including anything longer than 10 years ago." That immediately eliminates any growth or diversity you might have had in your skillset before Intel.
