Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

The reason Intel got so bloated and over staffed

was managerial lack of focus. Starting/stopping/changing too many initiatives and staffing them to the hilt, then going nowhere in terms of results. Excerpt from another post. (So true)!!!! I still see this going on and on and on and on.

There is two ways for managers to advance. One is to actually move up, the second is to hire as many RCGs as you can so it will make you look important, so pure greed. Managers are addicted to the second option as moving up is nearly impossible.

It is bloated because senior managers and MCM as well as those that are deciding on cuts have no clue as to what most people do and can't make a cut if their life depends on it. That ignorance goes all the way up to BK. Basically the management has no clue as to how many people it takes to do what they need. So management build empires...

In the end that is why the cuts were so algorithmic and stupid.

Why it's bloated? It's because of the empire building done by managers. You know, those types who wants 100s of people reporting to them and conquering other department through mergers. I've gone thru a few mergers first back in 2005.

1dku here... "fininto" should be "final nail into the coffin". Server choked as I was finishing post.

Another good thread is going on about what went wrong. And even some ideas to salvage the wreck. As we all know, while BK may be the one to put the fininto the coffin, Intel has been in a long slow slide for sometime, and PSO may actually be the real culprit. They should have gone outside for a CEO after PSO instead of hiring a factory manager. Intel is unlikely to go away entirely but it will be either much smaller or a much different company. https://www.thelayoff.com/t/Iq7lNQT

OP: "......staffing them to the hilt, then going nowhere in terms of results....". Maybe because they did not staff them with the right skills? Looking at LinkedIn profiles for skills that cover the communications/wireless skills at Intel I wonder is this the best this company can do with ALL the money they spend? Degrees from schools unheard of, schools with no real programs in these areas, schools like ".....Agricultural University....", and so on. You can staff a project with as many hot bodies you want, end result garbage in, garbage out....not to mention engineering managers with a total of 3-5 years of experience, one year at a failed startup, two years somewhere else, then engineering manager in Intel, and most of them from the same 1-2 ethnic backgrounds....I am about to believe that there is a real shortage of skilled people from decent schools and advanced degrees.....

Don't forget Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga would manage (much) better INTEL then these two GoGo girls: BK and MR.

IMO, if management pigeonhole current employees without letting them learn new skills for future new projects, then they often need to hire additional people for new projects or initiatives.

Don't even get me started on Beethovan's 5th and Parson's. My first thoughts for both:

  • Parson's - First of all, I didn't know who he was so all I had to go by was how he looked (I didn't know he was a star). My first reaction was... OMG! Why do we have someone representing Intel that looks JUST LIKE Peewee Herman?!??! (The first pic I ever saw of Parson's was that side smile smirk that Peewee did). And yes, I'm being serious.

  • Beethovan - OK, so if it's supposed to appeal to MILLENNIALS... do any of them even know Beethovan?? lol My first thought was Beethovan is pretty ancient and will not appeal to them so was pretty surprised by that as well. I'd think they'd want something more current, say, like, Will.I.Am. OK! I was being sarcastic about Will.I.Am! LOL He was another WTF for me (and I at least know who he is. My mother is a fan of theirs. And Snoop Dogg but can't see him being the voice of Intel. lol).

There hasn't really been any effective marketing from Intel since Intel Inside, and that only worked for the PC boom of that time. I'm assuming the weird reality TV show they did was part of the new marketing. Not sure how you promote drones and bracelets and IoT toothbrushes and datacenters to the mainstream consumer. The company needs to find something everyone wants to have -- and wants to upgrade yearly -- or get into a different line of business. Jobs was a genius what with phones.

And then there is marketing. the big campaign where they ruined an iconic piece of world music (Beethoven's 5th) with the Intel Bong in TV ads. Supposed to appeal to the millennials. But the millennials don't watch TV. Some of the Parsons ads are funny but no matter how good, cannot revive a declining PC market.

This just proves the point that the management does not know what they are doing.
