Former Corporate VP Wen-Hann Wang made a video (that was later posted to Circuit) about the dangers of Intel's shift from an engineering culture to one focused on (internal) politics.
He referenced IBM's collapse and re-birth under Gerstner.
Anyone have a copy of the video or transcript?
He was a remarkable guy and was trying to provide advice when he was on his way out (when it was presumably safe enough). No one listened, of course. At least no one who mattered.
I remember watching his speech on Circuit and found it a bit simplistic.
@1hlv - Like much of Intel, Intel Labs has lost its way. Not sure if BK and MCM just don't have much faith in it being able to accomplish anything useful (because of lack of leadership and good people in the lab) or whether BK just doesn't understand how to use it as a strategic resource.
People in Intel Labs SHOULD be different than people on standard engineering teams. When they're not credible with folks in the rest of the company (for whatever reasons) then there's a problem.
Either way, I agree it's full of bozos and not the rock stars that it should have.
Wen's challenge to stop hiring bozos would make more sense if that was the main problem. The real issue is the bozos who were hired many moons ago and were placed (by other bozos) in positions of authority. They have created an environment where bozos thrive and everyone else suffers. Hiring smart people will only result in greater turnover, not the root cause.
From what I've seen ACT hasn't addressed bozos in any significant way.
I find it ironic that he was the one warning about "do not hire bozos"...if you know anyone in the Intel labs...then you already know full well that they ONLY hire bozos...all rejects from the engineering teams.
What's valued at Intel labs is powerpoints, and managers who get their minions to submit useless papers and then add their names to them(and useless patents too) so they can put this on their resume.
None of them can make a real product anyone will pay for, even if their lives depended on it.
This transition to internal politics is the slow decades long grueling end of Intel. I was there during the highly creative engineering culture days. Those days are gone.
Who cares about this Chinese VP? Intel needs an Indian VP to get any messages across.
