Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

How do they choose who gets laid off? Anyone have any serious insight? Just the process is soooo tight lipped.

I was interviewed by a couple independent contractors. Here's how it went down:

P:The thing is, it's not that I'm lazy, it's that I just don't care.

B: Don't... don't care?

P: It's a problem of motivation, all right? Now if I work my *ss off and CoP produces a few extra bbls, I don't see another dime, so where's the motivation? And here's something else, B, I have eight different bosses right now.

B: I beg your pardon?

P: Eight bosses.

B: Eight?

P: Eight, B. So that means that when I make a mistake, I have eight different people coming by to tell me about it. That's my only real motivation is not to be hassled, that and the fear of losing my job. But you know, B, that will only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired.

I would agreed, very helpful. Thanks xod. Are you able to reveal if a process' are in place to sniff out supervisors trying to save their friends, cronyism, favourites? There were some real shockers that were witnessed in the last 2 phases, some real strong people where sent packing well over the incompetent dead wood.

These comments apply for those (staff level) who report to a first level supervisor: The VP of each BU negotiates, and eventually gets told how many people (a dollar amount which translates into a range until final lists are finished). The first level supervisor does not choose directly. Instead their input is indirect and comes in the form of the normal midyear review/calibration process, in which that review is weighed with input by all 1st level supervisors who report to the same manager. The 1st level manager does the final ranking and discusses the results up the management chain. The first level supervisor is not privy to either the ranking results or the layoff choices until the until process is entirely over and right before the actual layoff of each individual (generally 1 - 10 days before depending on circumstances). So, to answer your question the 1st and 2nd level managers below the VP and inside each BU are the primary decision makers on who gets laid off, especially in the areas that are most subjective.
