Who cares about TO, is the process working yet? It is at least two quarters more likely three from first functional silicon on a new process and design!
10nm mobile designs have taped out already.
Intel missed the boat.
Their best hope for ICF is 7nm - good luck with that LOL! Mobile guys are already evaluating TSMC 7nm PDKs.
Intel is a HAS BEEN.
Intel and its silicon used to be synonymous with a five letter word defining silicon "Moore". Now BKs legacy will be losing it to a new five letter god "Chang" as the Foundry are the new ones driving our electronic desires and the whole silicon ecosystem. Nobody cares about their PC or laptop silicon, but boy our smartphone is the most important thing. Still at a loss how CRB, PSO, and now BK haven't figured out what is important. Modems, servers, memory and FPGA ain't going to save the company. ARM foundry on 10nm given PTD and TMG customer service is like asking a zebra to change it's stripes, not in the DNA of anyone in management there. Foundry will fail at 10nm like it did at 22 and 14nm
The time has passed when Intel could have had a viable foundry business. Even if split off to a separate company, I've used TSMC and cannot imagine TMG providing compelling tools, libraries, characterization, quick turns and customer support. TSMC has generations of experience and customer interactions, and a cost structure that supports their business. Intel never had a Morris Chang to create a world class foundry business. I don't think Intel could win business from GF either. No one will trust us.
If TSMC beats at both 10nm and 7nm, it could be the catalyst for the breakup of the Intel Titanic in two (or maybe even 3?)
At this point, it looks highly likely to happen within the next 2-3 years.
