@J6FJuvd-1gfa You do know that "sample" and "TO" at a foundry mean different things to different people.

For example if Intel was a foundry they'd say "TO" and "sampling of Cannonlake has already happened as well, wink wink.

You are spot on about everything else.

Apple and Nvidia so far has seen booming business and have NOT missed a product launch date yet with TSMC. iPhone7 is coming right on schedule, of course we won't know if and when shortages come. 10nm will test iPhone7s or iPhone8, and of course iPhone9 will be the 7nm TSMC process.

TSMC is known for bragging about something sampling about a year before it does, so anything from them is a bit suspect.

But otherwise, I agree that BK gets an F- thus far. Like him or not, PO knew how to be a CEO. BK so far has shown he can be a diva and a social justice warrior. He'll bring in outsiders and happily lay people off when Murthy feels like it, but as far as products are concerned, he's clueless.

And wait 2 more years for the aftershocks of ACT to hit. I know so many teams that were devastated, losing key people at key times. Some of them at the drop of a hat, no handoff or knowledge transfer whatsoever. The manager walks up to the next person and says "I need you to take over this, it's in an indeterminate state, the owner didn't document it because it wasn't anywhere near complete, and has files in areas only the owner had access to, have fun" and you're so lost you just start back at square one. I can't speak for TMG, but the product teams had the carpet pulled out from under them thanks to BK. Just watch this year's EB.

10nm is running for volume in Q4 to supply mobile customers.

One can debate whether TSMC 10nm is closer to Intel 14nm or 10nm, but from Apple's, Qualcomm, or Nvidia, all they can be are happy customers to see TSMC produce each generation like clock work and with each one get PPAC ( Power, Performance, Area, and cost ) improvement! It matters less to them whether TSMC is behind or ahead, all that matters is they deliver each generation on schedule, ramp it, and produce meaningful PPAC. Each new generation if the design guys get it right will over value to the customers to upgrade.

Intel's position is much more precarious now that we hear we have Kabby and Coffee both on 14nm, that will be FOUR generations on the same process node, thus minimum PPAC, if anything more and more expensive as silicon die won't be shrinking and no intrinsic power or performance improvement either. From all external appearances it looks like Intel the keep of Moore's Law has failed and that TSMC is now the keeper of Moore.

Sorry BK gets more than an F for letting this happen on his watch! He has end of Moore, Layoffs/ACT, and silly initiatives in modems, tablets, mobile, 5G and memory to his name!

Search the web the other posters are correct! TSMC has 10nm up and risk production coming and 7nm is yielding and already have working ARM cores out on it and by all reports are on schedule.

You all can draw your own conclusions on state of things!

It's not magic.

It's the sh!t-ton of leading edge mobile demand from both Apple and Qualcomm. They have more money than Intel now with which to invest in leading edge fab tech.

10nm is already running for Q4 production for the mobile players.

7nm is not far behind.

  1. They say they're going to start 10nm in 2016 and 7nm in 2017. So while other companies are seeing Moore's law slow down, TSMC has magically sped it up.
