Mail (USPS/Fedex)? Direct deposit? On the spot? If not, how long do I need to wait for that severance check to arrive.

I received my checks direct deposit. The same way I got my regular pay. Pay in lieu of benefits is delivered the day after your last day and if you sign the separation agreement the rest of the money is deposited 7 (I think it's 7. Might be another number) days after you sign. That's because if you sign you have that many days to change your mind.
In my case, I had to open a case with Cisco HR after a long wait of several months. Within three days Of the call I received several checks in the mail.
