Apple can choose Samsung and TSMC for their sourcing.

Why choose Intel? Too much cost. Too much capacity risk. Too much complexity. No support. And so on.

ICF was not very well thought out.

Just like McAfee wasn't thought out.

Just like Meego wasn't well thought out.

Just like Mica bracelets weren't well thought out.

Just like any number of Intel BS initiatives weren't well thought out.

@J9MrUUB-1qow Really, and where all their Aps processors made today? BTW until ther source can't deliver they are good.

Wouldn't the iPhone 7 have been in good shape is PSO had gotten them to commit to 10nm say three years ago and they would be like canonlake on 10nm waiting for 300million units a year or about 70 millions units in q3 and again in q4. Yeah f42 shell would be full, LOL

It is my understanding that Apple does not single source. If they do buy parts, Intel will be one of many sources.

Intel can't even build a modem on their own node. This entire rumor is laughable!

Never going to happen.

This was debunked thoroughly.

Intel would need to plan for Apple capacity well in advance. This should have already happened. Given that capex is down from previous years - I wouldn't hold my breath.

Also, Intel would need to allocate their own 10nm needs vs. Apple's needs and Apple would have to risk capacity given this prioritization. Intel is ALWAYS going to prioritize x86 over Apple simply due to the higher margins.

Finally, ICF is not easy to work with. If it was really great, Intel would have more customers and would not have had to buy Altera (their only major customer) - which by the way, has not yet delivered any product at all on an Intel node even after YEARS of development. 2017 is the latest date on the roadmap for 14nm - after promising 2015.

well if that happens maybe I can reapply for my old job, but I won't hold my breath. At least it looks like Intel may finally be getting it that x86 is a dinosaur.

Another take, sorry to burst your bubbles underloaded Intel, but first you must deliver your technologies on schedule and ramp your products on clock work schedule, Tick Tock, Tick Tock, Doing a Tick Tock Doe Dumb won't bring Fruit to your empty factory

No way Intel will be the SOLE supplier for Apple. Ain't gonna happen!

Dude you are a retard!!

First of all TSMC makes it for Apple. Also even Intel's modem is made by TSMC.

TSMC has huge factories and capacity put in place for Apple at both 16 and 10nm.

Intel planned both 22, 14 and 10nm capacity years ago. They were forcasted for the expected x86 capacity and a bit of foundry. Of course things have changed as x86 demand has dropped, yields on 14nm were problematic and there is no foundry to speak of. I highly doubt Intel has more than a few tens of million capacity per quarter and with Kaby and Coffee coming on 14nm means they won't get die scaling and thus less die/wafer. Now even if BK was stupid he wouldn't promise the valuable 14 and 10nm capacity to Apple for 30 bucks per die versus the hundreds Intel gets making x86. Then there is the LG deal promising at least some precious 10nm to LG.

Another reason I Highly doubt Apple will move is TSMC has delivered on schedule and Intel is the one that delayed both 14nm and 10nm. Cook cut his teeth on supply chain management I can't believe no matter how much they hate single source at TSMC and promises from BK and huge price concession he would commit to real capacity at Intel.

Feel free to debate
