Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Don't have to work during the severance period

Can anyone verify that you do not have to work you schedule shifts during this time and you will still get you severance as well as your hours you were suppose to work and any vacation paid? I was told by HR and managers but I don't believe anything they say. Looking on the severance website it states the following:

"Generally, you will be required to work for the duration of your notification period; however, your manager will discuss

specific transition plans and timelines based on the needs of the business. Contact your HR Business Partner if you

have questions regarding your notification period."

Which sounds like fluff to me

3tom is living in a bubble if he doesn't see what the company is doing to people with years or illness on their record and the movement away from having Americans do the jobs. Stop insulting the people that were Rifd. Better that person figure out how they are being kept. Looks like even jumping to a new job that opens up doesn't save you like it did in the old days. The people that were the most devastated last November were the ones who were so sure that they were safe.

RIF-ing is not done by value. Its done off of a paper spreadsheet. The occasional favorite may get a pass but far and wide a RIF is all accounting and lawsuit dodging. Nothng more. As i am told daily... IT IS WHAT IT IS folks.

@JMFGuDB-2yty...You hit the nail on the head(if they were so valuable, why were they RIFed?)

However. There are still some people who really think a RIF won't happen to them

If you were on EWA , there is already la RIF target on your back for Dec. 2016. Your EWA proved your department Does Not Need You !

Read Verizon's Lips: They want Out Of The Wireline Business(and Wireless retail stores). VZ wants to create an attractive sale price for new buyer(s).

I don't know. The guys were pretty careful about when they turned in their stuff. Really please be careful, I'm sure they were worried about getting fired for not doing what was asked even if it wasn't much. When that magic week hit, then all of the electronics went back at the end of the day and it was given to a manager in the building and the Credo was left on the desk. I've been thinking how much life has improved since then. Not financially, but so much more time in the evening and on weekends. He jokes that he is making more money now if you figure it out hourly. It takes a while to get through the stages of grief, but better days really were ahead.

When I found out ( laid off November 2015 final date 12/31/2015 ) I stayed home and logged in once in a while and made contact with HR saying I am searching for new jobs WFH, I filled out the timesheet using a special code HR will give you, it does exist, you have to ask for it.....and I returned the cell and badge, and never set foot in Warren HQ again.

I did nothing for them after being told I am F'd. Why would you ? I would not lift a finger for them. I kept mouth shut and looked for new jobs from home.

Not true, 2yty. The RIF is no respecter of skill level. However, to your point, most very valuable RIF-ees who i have seen have been able to find something in the company if they wanted to stay here. We have unloaded a lot of mediocre or people doing non-vital activities. Many more to go but it will be much harder to find opportunities to stay here as time goes on. Very painful for some, but necessary for the company.

Seems if your valuable, you would not have been rifed...

I have seen it both ways. One person I know left the day of the RIF and never had to come back at all. Another was forced to work straight through to the end date. Kind of unfair. Seems if you are valuable, you'll work. If you're fairly useless or redundant (i.e., unnecessary) you probably get to go home. If you have a merciful boss, you may get to go home.

Once you are notified of RIF it is YOUR time, period. If you want to work and your management lets you, then work. If you want to use the severance period to look for an internal job, then do that. It is your time to do as you wish.

Very sorry you were notified. You should probably do whatever they ask. Up to a certain point I think you can still get fired. Can't remember how many weeks that was, but the only person I recall doing anything substantial was a person who asked to be on the list. Make sure you turn over your equipment to a manager and document it. Don't just leave it on your desk or give it to a peer.

Use your severance "down-time" to update your resume, remove from PC your personal data and e-mails(from co-worker/friends) , cleanout desk, because ON your last day , you will not have access to anything except Verizon Benefits Connection website. It is hard finding a new job out there. Good Luck, Severance pay spends very fast with no money coming in and health benefits plus your normal expenses draining your bank account.

Does anyone know the HR business partner phone number. All I have is the help desk number that does nothing for me. I was able to register my account but have not been able to activate it since Thursday. And every time I contact the helpdesk they say they are working on it. If they don't fix this issue does that mean I won't get my severance package. Also I've been told to hold off on accepting it now. To do it after I get my last paycheck, would this affect my paycheck in some forms. Like taking one and forfeiting the other? I was told I'd be getting both regardless. But again I can't trust this company anymore.

I would tell you to check with your shop steward first, then maybe put a call into the hall, and bounce it of your business agent. But we don't have Layoffs...It's in the contract we just won.

You may be told 'see ya' tomorrow or told to stay. Check with your supervisor. Many were told last time to leave now and still got the severance and what not. It just depends on where your needed or nit needed till the divorce is finalized.

Good luck.

Depends on your manager and your position. Some don't want you to come back, but my former coworker was expected to show up.

I was laid off last November 4th and last day on payroll was December 31st. I did not have to go back to work but I had to take back any company equipment I had before my last day.
