Termination with Severance: Threading the Needle

If I were to be let go tomorrow, for no fault of my own (besides sticking around at this crummy company as long as I have), I'd have a sizeable severance package.

So, my question is, how do I get them to fire me, but without legitimate cause? How do I walk that fine line so that they'll just have to get rid of me, but still have to give me my severance package.

Any ideas?

(besides pretending to join a cult)

Just tell them that you think HOS is stupid. That'll do it.

I think the severance packages in Canada are a bit more locked down that they are in the U.S. That's also, unfortunately, why we will be the last to go. First, we're getting paid less than our U.S. counterparts (even adjusting for currency) and, second, our severance packages are much better I think.

Traditionally they offer severance if you are let go for performance. Especially if you are older than 55...they don't want the law suit.

The only real problem is. Severance is NOT a law or a guarantee. Nor is the 26 weeks. Not meaning to depress anyone further but checkout what Hewlett Packard did in its last layoff. Severance packages were literally cut in half ) ; And no one could do a thing about it.

I want out too. Too young to retire, to old (59) to build a new career. S---s I will be volunteering next RIF too if possible. Hopefully the package will not change for the worse.

Work a flat 40 hour week for all of 2017 and I can assure you November RIF will smile upon you. Oh - if you can charge general allowable for half the time - you will be out in June of 2017. Enjoy.

I saw someone toss their report at PM (The Clearwater site leader) and said "Here's your fvck'n report" He was walked in 2hrs with no fan fare and he collected unemployment. I think you can just make your boss or mgr look bad at every meeting and you will be selected for the next RIF.

That's the smart thing to do and the million $$ question. I think the legitimate cause thing is out the window at 55 YO give or take. They give you the 26 weeks just as an insurance policy to keep you quite. During last round of reviews my manager put it out there if any one is thinking about leaving HR needed someone the bottom 10% if he could get a volunteer. We all knew what that meant but no one took it. Today I'd jump in that. I think slow down, take more PTO, less staying late and volunteering may get you there. Hopefully they or the new company offers us old guys a package to leave. The new company may even be better than 26 weeks so be patient, it may pay off later. I'm 59 yo, at Honeywell for 36 years and work remote full time so please offer me a package.

For me it's personal. I want them to pay me to leave. I know they''re trying to get rid of North American workers as cheaply as possibly so that they can replace them with cheaper labour. I don't want to make it easy on them.

I've been at Honeywell too long. I want the severance to be able to take some intensive training before going to another job.

Hey there are so many of us waiting in line with you! Haha. The next volunteer RIF! Oh yeah, we will be knocking each other down to get there! I applaud you! And I am so with you. After 22 great years and 2 horrible- show me the money and I am gone.

To those of you who think we are just whiney crybabies- s--- it- you have no clue what it's like to give your career to a company you thought was great and to have them screw you a few years before retirement. Get. Out. Now. Words of advice I wish I had heeded. Easier to find a new career at 45 than 59. Just saying

I'll bet your coworkers love you.

If you want out, leave. If you are desirable/talented negotiate a starting bonus with your new company. If you are a lazy f---up looking for quick cash, best of luck to you gaming the system.
