Absolutely correct, OP! Even though it has been widely known that the PC market has been in decline for 5-10 years, the inability to fill the Intel fabs seems to have taken them by surprise. Duh! Poor management, poor decisions, poor preparation all plays into it. Now they decide to throw a Hail Mary with their brand of foundry. Ha! They cannot compete with the industry leader. What a bunch of novices. I can see them accepting business even at a loss just to save face and keep Fabs open. Open your eyes, folks! Business is not growing and neither are your careers.
Intel has seen little interest on any node, why is that if the process is so dense and the best out there?
Also why would anyone go to Intel a company and factory set up to run one internal product versus a company like TSMC where the whole company and infrastructure is setup to serve hundreds of customer and products in its fab, which do you think is better prepared and will provide better service. I am highly skeptical the Intelers can be chameleons and change their behavior and structure to be competitive.
They will get a few customers of course thru price concessions and those turned down my TSMC and make a huge press about it. Those turned down by TSMC or allocated to little capacity will make an empty 22nm fab and fire sale price from Intel look attractive, but like I said earlier if they were so good why aren't more companies flocking there?
The real reason Intel is courting foundry is the x86 business is so bad the fab loadings are evaporating and they have not enough starts. Their x86 business continues to fall and TSMC and Samsung have much larger cellphone volume.
Intel is desperate and desperate companies start doing desperate things, about anything...
