Geez, I really can't interpret Bob Smith 6 pm email. Who's direct and who's indirect? Are "direct" employees 100% excluded or some of them still taking furlough? Did he intentionally made it confusing so it can be interpreted either way?

The same thing happened last December. E&T was not included in the furlough because they were hit with the layoff at the beginning of the year
I'm with you about most of the EM engineers. Personally though I have no problem moving some work to countries that are buying our stuff. We asked the same of the Japanese auto industry. But after 20ish years of this (I remember when Krishna Mikkilineni went to India to ostensibly "visit his sick mother" and opened up an office there...) As far as a SW company, I believe E&T thinks they did the job by refurbishing the cafeteria and a couple of conference rooms, LOL. Note that there's no wifi for personal use! Go to any Silicon Valley company and that's like oxygen! Plus I heard Bob Smith wants to start using Google-style interviews.
In my COE, the director (T3) and all the T4s need to take the furlough but everyone else is to work.

Engineering isn't responsible for scope creep and moving targets on specifications from internal and external customers. For every engineer doing the work, there are 7 non-value added people asking if it's done yet, nano-managing, calling meetings for three hours of the work day (to ask if it's done yet and beat up the engineers), and adding outsourced amateurs to the group and calling them "resources". That's what is adding cost. Engineers can estimate what true costs are associated, but not the bureaucracy and over head parasitism.
This is such BS, it is Bob Smiths engineering group that is the primary cause of this recent loss. Engineering cannot estimate costs or control costs to save their lives. Engineering is driving unprecedented EAC growth and causing huge overruns.
Albuquerque and Deer Valley alone account for 90% over the cost growth
Apparently, we're so efficient that our leadership can't even get a furlough email right the first time. Pathetic excuse for a Fortune 100 company.
Bob Smith said "Your manager will be in touch with you if you are part of this group" My manager (Engines site) said he has no further information to share but will share as soon as he hears anything. Who's talking to whom? This whole thing is messed up. The RIF wasn't communicated right, rumors allowed to go unchecked, people so angry with feeling helpless. This is a prime example of how not to appreciate your employees and how not to reduce the work force.
We're not stupid or children. Just tell us what's going on & get on with it.
A "direct" employee fills out a time card which itemizes how much time is spent to specific projects. An "indirect" employee does not charge to specific projects.
I'm guessing "direct" = full time salaried employees and "indirect" = contractors. Usually that's what it means judging from my experience.

Earlier today, employees were informed Aerospace will be conducting a furlough in the United States and Puerto Rico in September. As has been noted in recent town halls and broadly in the news media, there has been significant slowdown in the Aerospace industry with our customers and competitors reporting slower sales and conducting cost cutting activities in this challenging environment.
Although we are taking this action, we recognize we still have customer deliverables and development timelines we must meet. Therefore, some E&T employees will participate in the furlough to help manage costs, however, all E&T direct employees, and a select group of indirect employees, will be excluded from the furlough. The type of headwinds we are facing are tough but we have seen them before and I know we can remain a strong franchise. I appreciate your continued dedication to meeting our development program deadlines and customer commitments, and focus on Producibility and SWIFT, as this will help drive Aero’s short-cycle sales and breakthrough growth.

It was not a mistake. Don't worry, everyone will be out of the US within 5 years. If you aren't included in this RIF, there are plenty more for you coming up. In the meantime, I will continue to strip away benefits, retirements and issue pay cuts in the form of furloughs until every last person is no longer working for Honeywell in the Us. Well, except for me and my elite leadership of course.
