Just be careful Intel delivers on their promises and doesn't stab you in the back after you're committed, like they did to me.

I did an expat assignment in China. It was a great experience, plus all of the extra pay was about 37% above my normal salary. When you factor in next to no living expenses (just food and entertainment) you can save a lot in a short time.

Go for it. Yes, working hours are brutal if you go to KM/PG. CD/Dalian is better working hours as most staff uses intel transportation to get to work and back (due to heavy traffic), so most leave on time. As an expat, you will have a car and driver in china as you are not allowed to drive there. But I think you will enjoy the assignment, in Asia, the colonization mentality is still fresh in their culture although they try to break free from it, so they tend to look up and treat westerners differently, whether it's outside office or in the office. And international experience and exposure will bring you new opportunities for career after intel.

I think if Intel is offering to send you and cover the costs, go for it. It will look fantastic on a resume and be a great learning opportunity for the family if they keep an open mind. I used to work with Workforce Mobility and they are great people and I always wished I had something to offer so I could take on a relo assignment!

Don't go. These 3rd world countries need white people to govern them. The pollution and lack of freedom is not worth it.

Several managers I know did the expat thing and yes they had all the salary + rent allowance etc. It was a positive experience. I guess it depends on the family and what uprooting and missing friends etc. I have not heard about the working hours. Yes in Japan they are required to work 12 hrs + Saturday - it is brutal. You would have more job security there vs. the US. Here, as you know...things are changing on a daily basis. No surprise to receive an email on a Sunday night saying a new 1:1 with your manager. Everyone is on pins and needles.
